Nostromo gets top marks for being the book on my shelf that makes me feel the most guilty for not reading yet. Should I?

And also, let's talk about Conrad and why he's good.

I've read Heart of Darkness probably 3 times (possibly more), and each time I don't like it. It's too elusive like that blasted fog that contains the meaning.

The Secret Sharer is grebt though in that psychological suspense thriller sort of manner.

Heart of Darkness is amazing. I can't remember a damn thing except that secrectary who seems devastated, which was the most subtle use of an unsubtle word I've ever read.

I've had Nostromo sitting on my shelf for years as well. Every few months I look at it and sigh. I recently read a collection of the short tales. Youth was my favorite--about a young sailors first voyage on a coal ship. Absolutely everything goes wrong, and he loves every minute of it.

three years pass...

funny - i've had 'Lord Jim' on my shelf for years. i felt like reading something rich and preferably written before the 1970s so i grabbed it a few days ago and the first 50 pages are really lovely.
