I'm reading Pierre et Jean, in English, and loving it. Which of his should I pick up next?

Find a nice comprehensive edition of the stories. There are even single volume complete story collections (they are massive though). You can't go wrong there.

If you haven't already, check out "The Horla," written, I believe, in the throes of syphyllitic delirium. Crazy stuff.

Yeah The Horla is cool. Maupassant spent the last 18 months of his life in a lunatic asylum, during which period he wrote it.

'Boule de Suif' is a must-read. BTW, he's always been considered a huge influence on Mauagham.

Guy De Maupassant died of a sexually-transmitted infection resulting from his obsession with a prostitue. I believe it might have been (excuse my attempt at the spelling) Syphilis? He was not, at least to my knowledge anyway, ever comitted to an Asylum of any kind although he did apparantly suffer from a mental conflict of some kind but only after he contacted the disease. Delrious behaviour was a definite symptom of the disease

After a suicide attempt in 1891 (he tried to cut his throat), he spent the last 18 months of his life in a Paris mental home (the celebrated private asylum of Dr. Espirit Blanche).
I found it here -> http://classiclit.about.com/library/bl-bio/bl-gdemaupassant.htm

I read Pierre et Jean a few weeks ago: not bad. His short stories have a delicious after taste/

my kinda guy:

"When he drank, his great beard, which matched the color of his favorite beverage, seemed to tremble with affection; his eyes positively squinted in the endeavor not to lose sight of the beloved glass, and he looked for all the world as if he were fulfilling the only function for which he was born. He seemed to have established in his mind an affinity between the two great passions of his life—pale ale and revolution—and assuredly he could not taste the one without dreaming of the other."
