Reminick's review of Liebling in the New Yorker brought tears to my eyes. You?

No tears, exactly, but it sure made me want to read some A.J. Liebling.

I've been a fan of Liebling for years, and was overjoyed to see the piece (though I still think Remnick spends too much time trading on the New Yorker's past). The Earl of Louisiana is one of the funniest accounts of a political campaign I've ever read, and a wonderful tour of New Orleans and Baton Rouge as well. Out of print, unfortunately, as is a lot of Liebling's best stuff, including his Wayward Press articles (collected in The Press), where he warned of media consolidation long before anyone even knew the idea existed.
