I'm going to say John Gardner (and do a little dance since I beat Phil to it). Also José Saramago (almost painfully so, sometimes). Here's a question: Would you prefer your philosophy in service to fiction or your fiction in service to philosophy?

Jostein Gaarder??? He's touting himself as a philosopher, these days, despite having almost no education in the subject.

SRH (Skrik), Saturday, 17 April 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I´m a philosopher despite having almost no education in the subject. In fact, so was Socrates, and in fact it's not really a question of diplomas and degrees is it? Eminem is probably not a philosopher, but who knows about Britney. Jostein is from Norway so the odds are against him. He's more concerned where to invest his oil money. Socrates, on the other hand, is a Brasilian, and every Russian schoolboy knows that God is Brasilian.

Saul Bellow!!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 18 April 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't/Didn't Jostein Gaarder teach philosophy at a Norwegian middle school? I think I heard that somewhere.

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Monday, 19 April 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to love Richard Bach's books when I was younger. I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole now. Well, maybe Illusions. Just for old time's sake.

Jostein Gaarder used to teach a philosophy course in a Norwegian folkehøyskole (folk-high-school).

The folkehøyskole is a year-long offer to kids after they finish at the Norwegian equivalent of the US high school. It is for those who are interested enough to attend. The schools are privatly owned and run, and there is no central standard for the quality of the education they offer. The courses offered are often those the teachers feel comfortable offering.

The vocational and arts courses offered are usually very valuable for people wanting to go further in those areas, such areas being neglected in the public school system.

For a typical example, take a look here.

Jostein Gaarder has a single composite degree form the University of Oslo in the subjects Norwegian (3 semesters), history of ideas (two semesters), and history of religion (2 semesters). He has one introductory semester of philosophy, which was obligatory. I know people with doctorates in philosophy, and even they shy away from the "philosopher" epithet.

Mind you, Gaarder also touts himself as a pedagog, without a shred of pedagogical education.

Lorrie Moore.

I am spending at least 15 seconds imagining that she might be some kind of Rortyan.

OK, they're over.

the bluefox, Monday, 19 April 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Did I never mention to you my proposed essay: 'Saint Lorrie of Madison: the mundane temptations of the liberal ironist'?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps we should make it 15 minutes, then.

the moorefox, Monday, 19 April 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom Robbins!

Fred, Monday, 19 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

That folkehøyskole is folkenfantastic, man. Where else can you take 'gym' as a subject? Tell me, do these school get overpopulated with a bunch of burn-outs?

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)
