ha ha.

that might be good fun. choose a book that everyone has to read and then discuss online?

griffin doome, Monday, 22 December 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in one in London. We're relaunching new year and could do with some new people. Any London based posters are welcome. We usually meet in Bloomsbury.

Will update when we have a date.

E-Book Club sounds a grand idea. Administrating it? Bit tricker.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 22 December 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

an e-book club might be fun. each month someone makes suggestions on a certain book and then one month later - we all meet up to discuss it online.

griffin doome, Monday, 22 December 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not a bad idea. The book club didn't work out very well on ILE, but maybe it would have better luck here.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 22 December 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I would be interested in trying this.

Berkeley Sackett (calstars), Monday, 22 December 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

o.k., let's start this on 2 january. one month to read it. o.k. who wants to choose the first book?

griffin doome, Monday, 22 December 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

if it'd something shortish (er..) id be up for it.

what about The Alchemist?

j/k

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll definitely take part.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha - first question - who wrote the alchemist and who would be up for that?

griffin doome, Monday, 22 December 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i was really kidding about The Alchemist! please god, no!

Paul Coehlo (sp?) it's one of those books that people who never read books try and foist on you.

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha. o.k. i read veronika decides to die and didnt think much of it.

suggestions, then. i'm up for anything really.

griffin doome, Monday, 22 December 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

has everybody already read Flaubert's Parrot? I just got it at the thrift store. I've always wanted to read it.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i got a book by Naguib Maffouz at the thrift, but i'm suspicious of it cuz he won the Nobel. Reading a Nobel winner is kind of like finishing your vegetables before you can get dessert and read something fun.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

scott - its only right that you should choose the first book. this board is gathering speed nicely, no?

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm enjoying it! I'm so glad other people are up for it. Apparently i wasn't alone.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't need to be the one to choose. There should be some sort of consensus. I will throw Flaubert's Parrot out there cuz i just thought of it and it certainly seems to be sufficiently bookish for a book club. But if everyone has already read it or there is a better choice then I'll read anything. I like the idea.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Having a january start date is a good idea too. It will give people time to find the thread.
And jed, thanks for starting/reviving those threads on ILM & ILE. that was a good idea for people who don't otherwise check the other spin-off boards.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ok could try that scott. I'm up for this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i recently finished john o'hara's butterfield 8, which i LOVED, and am keen to read something else of his - maybe appointment in samsara? would anyone be up for that?

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Scott, nothing against Flaubert, but I would rather we read something a little more current. How do others feel?

Berkeley Sackett (calstars), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

oh no, the book i mentioned is kinda current. it's Flaubert's Parrot by Julian Barnes. It is sorta about Flaubert though. In a PoMo/Meta/Whatsit kinda way.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

How about Tom Carson's Gilligan's Wake?

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

How does this sound: Everybody who wants in should suggest a book and then on January 1st or 2nd we will make a list of all the suggestions and everyone will choose 2 or 3 books from the list that they think sounds interesting. The title that pops up the on the most lists of 2 or 3 is the book we read!
Is there an easier way?
I guess we should be thinking of books that are easy enough for everyone to find as well.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be up for the Parrot, always meant to, never read it, have mostly enjoyed Barnes.
This club in general sounds like a lot of fun, though... assuming, of course, that it'll have me. It's hard to get a good literary discussion going on ILX cuz everybody's reading habits are so different.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I second or third or whatever Flaubert's Parrot, mostly because I can see it on my bookshelf from where I'm sitting and I've never read Julian Barnes.

spittle (spittle), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 06:21 (twenty-two years ago)

So, whaddya say you start with Flaubert's Parrot?

Maria D. (scott seward), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

o.k., let's start there - i've always meant to read barnes but lived in fear of bad contemporary english literature!!

other books as recommendations:

nana - zola
richard ford - the sportswriter.

griffin doome, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's fitting that Scott should choose first. I've read two Barnes books this year and more of the same would be fine.

Perhaps we can follow Flaubert's Parrot with Flaubert? A link between subsequent books! As long as it isn't Paolo Coelho.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't mind who chooses as stated above - but let's avoid the trap of 'ile' and keep it more communal. y'know?

griffin doome, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Following Flaubert's Parrot with Flaubert sounds fancy and fun.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds good to me, you guys. i just got on here as of 5 p.m. eastern-i couldn't get on all day- anyway, i'm off for holiday cheer! I'll be checking this board from various computers along the way. Later.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm up for Flauberts Parrot

enjoy yr holiday cheer!

jed (jed_e_3), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

cool. this will be my introduction to barnes. what's the timeframe?

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

enjoy yr hols!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh-oh... I hope I didn't just try to order the same used copy off Amazon that everyone else did... maybe we should start deciding right away which Flaubert Flaubert to read so we can start hunting copies?

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm up for this in general, but if flaubert's parrot ties into flaubert,i'd rather not read it without having read the original...
how about something by flaubert himself first of all?

i don't really mind though,i just have a thing about not reading a book that refers to something else without being familiar with the something else...
if everyone else wants to go with the flauberts parrot thing i don't mind though

robin (robin), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

So far, the Barnes I've read has been self-explanatory enough...

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm up for it too. when do we need to read it by to begin discussion?

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, I'm back. Writing this from snowy Northhampton,Mass. 1st stop on our trip. Howzabout Feb 1 to finish? Is that enough time?

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

that's ok with me.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Count me in. I've been meaning to read it for years.
Nice and slim too:)

pete s, Wednesday, 24 December 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

hey pete quit bragging,
some of us are big and fat*
but we'll read barnes too

*willful misreading of text just to make a dumb joke = typickal.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

also = quite amusing, unless misreading is used to impugn character...

(of course, if you go THAT far and are still in the satirical vein it can be fun too...)

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Thursday, 25 December 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm been wanting to do something like this. I'm in.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 1 January 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

whooooooooo! that was a whirlwind trip. Hope everyone enjoyed their holidays. Happy New Year! I'm gonna start reading Flaubert's Parrot tomorrow. I've been looking forward to it.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 2 January 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Many more people on this board since Jan. 2 (!) so I figured I'd bump this thread to see if we can get a few more readers with time left before Feb. 1.
