Let's have a thread on Canadian authors, eh?

I'm interested in the way Canadian English differs from other breeds, so I'd like to hear about some good recent Canuckbooks to absorb it through. Anyone?

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Monday, 17 May 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The "How To Be A Canadian" book was pretty funny.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 17 May 2004 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

But most of the Canadian books I've read are a few decades old (and aren't novels, if that's specifically what you're gunning for).

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 17 May 2004 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Mordecai Richler, Yann Martel, Guy Vanderhaeghe (sp??) (The Englishman's Boy), Ian Ferguson (who cowrote How To Be A Cdn) has a very nice very recent memoirish Village of the Small Houses, Diane Warren (not the songwriter), Lee Henderson, Kevin Chong, Nancy Lee, Chester Brown, Brad Smith, Brad Fraser, Ray Robertson, Matt Cohen, Alice Munro, Margaret Atwood, and that's just off the top of my head. When you've read most or some of those and are ready to discuss, I'll be waiting. Right here.

Isn't just?! A friend of mine sent it to me, because I want to move up there and she wanted to make sure I wasn't one of the usual ignorant Americans... which she knew, but I think she wanted me to take the citizenship test and just become a Canuck already.

(you forgot to apologize in that post, so test: failed, sorry.)

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 17 May 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Robertson Davies. (I must confess I haven't actually read his books. A guy I dated briefly was always raving about them, and they sounded interesting)

Jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 17 May 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, you know, they have words in them and stuff. I guess they're alright.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Lynn Coady's _The Saints of Big Harbour_ is a good one. Pretty much anything by her, actually. Thomas King's _Green Grass, Running Water_ is excellent - too bad it lost to _Last Crossing_ on Canada Reads.

At last a thread about William Shatner (Wikipedia). Some of us have been waiting for this our whole lives.

I'm making my way through Munro's Selected Stories and enjoying it greatly, particularly the "Beggar Maid" stories. I'm generally allergic to around-the-housey, home-and-hearthy short fiction, but I was pleasantly surprised here.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Jack Hodgins - Invention of the World
Robertson Davies - either of the Deptford or Cornish trilogies. Or, better yet, both.

I love Alice Munro so much. I hate to throw the "genius" tag around too much, but her stories just blow my mind. Structure, storytelling, language. Everything about them. She's very innovative! And maybe you wouldn't guess that if you aren't really familiar with her stuff and just look at the homely/matronly book covers. But then Katherine Ann Porter and Willa Cather, two other great innovators, were often similiarly disguised.

Leonard Cohen!!

Charles Dexter (Holey), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

...so does Dave Sim!

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

He's not really an author, but Whatever. I love the one film of his that I've seen and I dig his website big time.

Michael Ondaatje, eh?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Robertson Davies. He reminds me of AS Byatt. Can anyone else see that?

isadora (isadora), Saturday, 29 May 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

In the small (micro) press, Matthew Firth puts out some great stuff.

blackbilepress.com I believe.

Frank Marcopolos, Monday, 31 May 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep hearing about this Matthew Firth. Any particular title especially worthy?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 31 May 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

or is it Matthew Frith?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 31 May 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Firth puts out a lit/crit zine which is very good, Front & Centre.

He also does story collections and other good stuff.

I really enjoyed Kelley Armstrong's Bitten. Stolen, however, sucked. Dime Store Magic should be interesting...

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Another one for ONDAATJE.

Lazer Guided Mellow Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

How could I neglect L. M. Montgomery! Anne of Green Gables was my idol as an 11-year-old

Jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know what ONDAATJE means...

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

ONDAATJE means supple, poetic prose, dreamlike narrative and sensuality. ONDAATJE means READ "IN THE SKIN OF A LION"!!

Lazer Guided Mellow Leee (Leee), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
Let's not forget Alistair MacLeod! My god but he rocks. "No Great Mischief" was up for every Canadian book award and won the Trillium Prize.
