Martin Amis has an excellent book review (of Updike, I think) that begins with a list of literary opposites: Updike and Beckett, Joyce Carol Oates and Borges, etc. Leon Uris and Nicholson Baker are another pair, he says, which has always kept me from trying Uris (since Baker is one of my absolute favorites)
