Books that take place in other countries. Where in the world? Which book? Why do you like it?

The Beach by Alex Garland; Takes place in Thailand.
Are You Experienced by William Sutcliffe; Takes place in India.

I like both because they're both about young, 20-somethings experiencing new things during their travels. Easy to relate to (read both in England, so I could relate to the culture-shock, feeling-like-you-don't-belong feeling).

"A Fine Balance" by Rohinton Mistry took place in India. I loved it for its bold descriptions. I can still remember even the smells from that book.

EM Forster's Where Angels Fear to Tread. For beautiful rural Italy. Also the Mma Ramotswe books just make me want to take the next plane to Botswana.

I like what Elan is saying above, the senses that linger.

"Homage to Catalonia" by George Orwell. Not only does it do a great job of capturing the idiocy of war, it also gives a good sense of the odd place that Spain was during the late 1930s (his descriptions of Barcelona are particularly evocative).

Shadow of the Wind (yes, i am obsessing over it :>), Barcelona.

Another Spanish one that evoked the area / era was the Carpenter's Pencil by Manuel Rivas. Set in Galicia (the writer is Galician) during the civil war. Much preferred this to Hemingway. In fact I prefer Laurie Lee's account of the war more than Hemmingway.

Perfume by Suskind - Paris as another universe.
