What do you think about the genre of puzzle books?

I am talking about DaVinci Code and The Rule of Four.

Formulaic but if it gets more people reading about the rennaisance or the classics....

I thought this was a thread about this sort of book:

I am finding out a lot of interesting things reading The Da Vinci Code--things about Phi, the Golden Mean, and the Mona Lisa.

In my case it's not so much about thinking... I just get completely stuck. Ended up reading The Da Vinci Code in one go (took me around 15 hours and a bit of one-handed sandwich making). In retrospect, I can't honestly say I think it's a good book, but that kind of escaping from reality makes it fantastic anyway. Were you thinking of any other books like this? I would love to find them, but don't really know where to look.

I've not read the Da Vinci code (because I'm being a snob, I admit) but I do like literary/historical mysteries a lot if I'm in the mood.
I loved The Club Dumas, Possession, The Winter Queen.
I am quite irked that the majority of Perez-Reverte's and Akunin's other novels have not been translated into English, I would gobble them up this summer. The bloke liked Foucault's Pendulum and The Name of the Rose a lot, he keeps trying to get his parents to read them when they are talking about the Da Vinci code.

Phi and The Da Vinci Code.

God I'm being anal but Pi and Phi are two separate letters in the Greek Alphabet

God I'm being anal but Pi and Phi are two separate letters in the Greek Alphabet and in Mathematics (apologies for being so snarky)

Yes, and phi is the one they're talking about. Phi = 1.618....

Check my link for more info. (I know about pi, after all I published this. ;-)

Don't worry about it. ;-)
