What do USA citizens think about Michael Moore books?

Bed (Bed), Monday, 30 August 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Being a liberalish American woman in my late twenties, most people think I would be a follower of Moore and his propaganda. However, he's like all the right-wing conservative Republicans who think that nobody's opinion matters unless it agrees with theirs. And be damned if I have to lie and exaggerate to try and sway your opinion or to enrage you. He's a holier-than-thou extremist and he will fade away like those before him. He's like an unkempt Rush Limbaugh on the other side of the basketball court. That being said, if you like politics and have a long attention span, his books are not a terrible read. I'd stay away from "Stupid White Men" though, because it's an eye-roller and it goes on and on and on and on and on and on....

Most moderate liberals are embarrassed by Moore in the same way that most moderate conservatives are embarrassed by Limbaugh. He's a provocateur in a time when Americans desperately need to find a way to have civil conversations and appreciate reasoned decision-making again.

Moore's definitely not in the same territory as Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter. I don't agree with everything he says and he does have certain conspiracy theories that he likes to repeat too much, but there's also some good with the bad. If you've seen it, Farenheit 9/11 is a perfect example. There's some real bogus stuff in there that's basically unsubstantiated insinuation (the parts about the Bush connections to the Saudis), but there's also some real good stuff in there (the parts about the war in Iraq).

I think Moore hurts himself when he goes off on his anctics and I don't take his books seriously at all (his movies, manipulative as they are, are far more rigorous than his books). I pretty much classify Moore's books on the same shelf as any number of comic takes on politics -- they're funny, there's a grain of truth there, but they're not real journalism. But he certainly is not as hate-filled and blatantly psychotic as someone like Coulter. There is a world of difference between the two.

selfnoise OTM
While I don't promote Moore to my friends or family, I do think he plays an important role in the political process. I also think I've gotten his point rather well by seeing F9/11 -- I feel no need to read anything by him.

I've read all his books. I need to remind myself that the Religious Right is not the only voice in the US. They are not great writing, but I think they are a necessary and welcome addition to current political rhetoric. Scott, I agree with you and have often argued as much to others- Moore is not nearly as mean-spirited and freakshow crazy as Coulter and Limbaugh. His filmmaking is much closer to art than his writing. He continues to grow as a filmmaker, but his books are stuck in high school. He recently wrote an open to letter to Bush on Salon.com that was embarrassing in its sophomoric tone.

Moore is pretty damn moderate. In Fahrenheit 9/11, he talks about how "our country's troops defend us" and how noble they are. In most Westernized countries that would be considered a pretty right-wing stance. I guess that shows how much this country needs his books. Which are funny, by the way.
