Anyone want to come to Don Paterson's TS Eliot lecture at the Royal Festival Hall on 30 October? Followed by a Faber poets reading: Paterson, Simon Armitage, Alice Oswald, Charles Simic, Wendy Cope and Adam Zagajewski.

(Pints too, naturally.)

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooooohhhhhh, dammit. Stupid living in Dublin.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 7 October 2004 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like it'll just be me then, and you monkey in spirit :(

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm interested, Archel. Looks like the only thing it clashes with is Match of the Day. (What time is the event, actually?)

the bellefox, Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The lecture is a 4pm and the reading is at 7.30.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 7 October 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

So... we're not meeting in New Jersey and reading Williams? Pity.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 8 October 2004 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we go to that nice pub near Waterloo in the break? Assuming the lecture doesn't last three and a half hours.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 8 October 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe we should, indeed, all do this.

the pomefox, Saturday, 9 October 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey - Cozen should attend!

the pomefox, Saturday, 9 October 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

me?

I should.

the book's out.

it's a new one.

I think it very good.

I wonder, 'could I make this?'

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

it's probably possible, though expensively so.

never forget what you learn.

and always read paterson.

well, not always.

some times.

some.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 9 October 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Good.

the pomefox, Monday, 11 October 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like a good plan so far. Let us reconvene on this thread nearer the time :)

Archel (Archel), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought Nil Nil today! It is very ace. I shall try to make this - it'd be nice to see people.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 11 October 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

gregory, I am prone to giving that book away.

this: if only.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

half of which means 'maybe'.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I just realised that my copy of 'The Eyes' isn't actually mine at all, but was lent to me by an ex-boyfriend and was a gift to HIM from another of his exes. This sums up all that is wrong with my life.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

In that case, you don't have much to worry about?

the bellefox, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

This is certainly true.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, bollocks. I am a blithering idiot. I don't know why I didn't realise it was the same date, but I have a prior arrangement with the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain and I have to go since I'm supposed to be training my replacement door person. Arsing arse.

Sorry for starting a thread under false pretences... :(

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 14 October 2004 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Normally, I don't mention these things, I just let it all wash over me, but this Oh, bollocks. I am a blithering idiot. I don't know why I didn't realise it was the same date, but I have a prior arrangement with the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain and I have to go since I'm supposed to be training my replacement door person. Arsing arse. is so adorably and completely British I've become slightly unhinged.

/fawning moment of anglophilia

Rabin the Cat (Rabin the Cat), Friday, 15 October 2004 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

But not all of us are as foul-mouthed as Ms P.

the bellefox, Friday, 15 October 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You're not in the Ukelele Orchestra, are you?

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 17 October 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, I'm not even British. Oh ok I am.

No, I'm not a member of the orchestra, but until last month I was a member of the organisation putting on the festival of which the ukelele performance is a part.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 18 October 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a Portland Uke Thing as well. First weekend in November. It sounds exciting.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 18 October 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I am on tenterhooks as to whether they will be able to play their famed version of 'Wuth3ring H3ights' - apparently there are legal wrangles with K4te Bu5h. Thrilling stuff.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 07:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps we should all go to see the arsing arse Ukelele Orchestra instead. We could kick up a kerfuffle at the door to put Ms P through her paces.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

She might swear at us.

LD Beghtol should really be in the Uke Orchestra.

the bluefox, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I am looking forward to hearing all about the Ukelele Orchestra.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Saturday, 30 October 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I live a fuller life simply knowing there is a Ukelele Orchestra. And one in Portland too!

Rabin the Cat (Rabin the Cat), Sunday, 31 October 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess it's just a Ukefest, rather than a Ukestra: http://home.teleport.com/%7Eportland_ukefest/index.html

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 31 October 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Also: Ukulele. I always get that one wrong.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 31 October 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you, I will probably remember that.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 1 November 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon Ms P, SET LIST!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 1 November 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Arrgh, after all that, I MISSED the whole thing. I was selling tickets for other events until 7pm, then had to dash home for a birthday party, yet *another* thing I'd previously forgotten. I met one of the orchestra and he was immensely tall, that's all I can report. I'm sure it was great though...

Did anyone go to Paterson in the end?

Archel (Archel), Monday, 1 November 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

it appears to have been quite the lecture. is there anywhere I can get to read it?

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 8 November 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

An extract was in the Guardian Review last Saturday - but it doesn't seem to appear in the internet version. There is lots of Patersonian Zen Blather... which I don't really care for.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't care for it neither. (I read it all, in a library!) It was 'arrogant' and 'elitist' - which one reads with caution, but still potential respect: but then it didn't cover itself by justifying those qualities.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Paterson co-edited this book that I now have, of poets on poetry, Don't Ask Me What I Mean.

the pomefox, Thursday, 23 December 2004 11:03 (twenty years ago)

I recieved ('i before e except after c') your e-mail PF.

I have read both your e-mail and 'don't ask me what I mean'. I meant to buy a copy when it came out in pb edn., recently.

I remember enjoying it, though perhaps a silly enterprise (obv., cf. the title, 'don't as me what I mean')?

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 23 December 2004 13:44 (twenty years ago)

"Ask"

the pomefox, Thursday, 23 December 2004 13:54 (twenty years ago)

nine months pass...
I'm going to see him tomorrow night!

the pomefox, Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Lucky! I am feeling a bit poetry-starved because I can't afford to buy books and I am working too much/being too bloody tired to get to readings :(

(By the way PF if you email me your address I will send you my book as promised/threatened.)

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

I thought Archel was reviving this thread for its one year anniversary.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Spooky. What a busy life I had one year ago.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Can I hide here from the suckiness that is ILE today? And the SPORTS THREADS? Don't tell anyone you saw me thx.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

I approve heartily of Don Paterson. But I fear I am a year late.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Pinefox, you will miss the Hopkins birthday celerybrations!

Unless you come early doors, then race back pissed for Paterson.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 6 October 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

It is nearly time! They are probably dusting the chairs off at the bookshop. I will pop in later and spray my scent around.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Miller, I aim to go to Paterson, then the bash. Do you approve?

I guess you have gone, already.

the bobfox, Friday, 7 October 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I had gone.

Other readers may like to know that I bumped into The Pinefox on my way out of the pub. He was of the opinion that Paterson's engagement with language paled next to that of Tim Hopkins.

I suppose I had better leave further comment to The Pinefox, or indeed Tim H, or even random googling Paterson.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Saturday, 8 October 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Serendipitously, I picked up DP's book of aphorisms from Hastings library yesterday. It's not much cop.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Saturday, 8 October 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

And when you say "It's not much cop," this means...?

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 8 October 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

It does not meet with Jerry the Nipper's approval.

I didn't know they let St Leonards ruffians into Hastings library.

I went to Maidenhead library yesterday, where I picked up the book of the TV series where George Bush claims that God speaks to him.

Maybe library borrowings deserve their own thread.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Sunday, 9 October 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

JtN: he read mostly aphorisms at his reading! They weren't that much cop. That means, they weren't that good.

Then he finished with ... oh, dear ... his translations from Rilke! I don't know poets always do this stuff. If it's not Rilke it's Dante.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

That Paterson, he never writes his own. Tch.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

the pinefox, maybe it's because they spend enough effort reading them, perhaps simultaneously with translating them well enough for themselves to understand them, that they somehow feel both a) that they then have something worth sharing with others who can't do that work for themselves, for whatever reason, and b) that they have done something they want to be reimbursed for, as it were.

Josh (Josh), Thursday, 13 October 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

much in the same way, i mean, an academic might feel, for both good and bad reasons, that their time spent immersed in some problem or other ought to result in publications.

Josh (Josh), Thursday, 13 October 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Maybe. But that does not make the prospect of hearing and reading them more exciting; if anything, less.

the pinefox, Friday, 14 October 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

What, exactly, don't you care for about it?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 14 October 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

one good aphorism and hundred others... a lot of pre-emptive safeguarding against self-importance in tone... doesn't even work if read as a novel... the disconnected aggrandisements of a genius in the shadows, scooping out his own head to size of the galaxy... a shadow of a markson, say... and very disappointing...

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

I take it his rilke translations are to be released as "sonnets to orpheus"?

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

I thought you loved the aphorisms, cozikistan?

Gold star for robotboy! (Chris Piuma), Friday, 14 October 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

that would be a good title for them if he translated the sonnets to orpheus! otherwise, not so much, yknow.

Josh (Josh), Saturday, 15 October 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

ha sorry I was referring to this

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 15 October 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)
