Speedreading -- C or D?

Since returning to grad school I've found myself making it through 3-4 books some days, sometimes reading a whole novel or book I don't feel that keen on mainly on the hour-ish long trainride to class + polishing it off in class itself.

I'm hitting something like 8 pages per minute or so, depending on the book and how carefully I pay attention.

I feel like somehow this is very destructive, but am I just worrying over nothing?

Some conversation about this here:

How Fast Do You Read?

Speedreading is like a sprinkle of rain. All the grass gets wet, but dig an inch into the ground and everything is dry.

But if there's a huge storm coming next week, sometimes a sprinkle is all you need at the moment. I agree, though, one cannot grow the best grass on a diet solely comprised of sprinkles.

Would you watch a movie on fast forward Sterling?

i watch movies on fast forward

sterl you can get what you NEED from a book by picking the right three paras, they just have to be the right ones

plus then when you don't have an assignment you can go back and read it nicely and it will be full of good stuff you didn't get the first time

rereading is better for you than reading anyway

I fast forward past extraneous stuff in movies all the time. How many falling-in-love montages do I need to absorb in one lifetime?

I hardly ever watch movies, which I consider a form of fast-forwarding.

I should do this more. Might get me into re-reading 'empire' etc.

Today I speedreaded the newspaper. I don't think I missed much, because if I hadn't speedreaded it, I wouldn't have readed it at all.

I also speedreaded Dickens once. I remember it quite well, but I suppose I went back and slowreaded bits of it.

I think if you slowread, there is more chance of your mind wandering.

Isn't the point of reading to get your mind to wander?
