Books and websites on writing

What books on fiction writing (giving either practical or 'inspirational' advice) would you recommend for a beginner? The sheer number of them out there is bewildering. I've gone for "Writing the Novel" by Lawrence Block for now but am not sure what it's worth.

Also, are there any websites on fiction writing you would also recommend for a beginner?

Many thanks in advance for any help on this.

I can recommend "Writing Fiction: A Beginner's Guide".

It was created for teenagers, so keeps things simple, but covers all the main topics. If you analyse even a part of what and how you write using their simple subjects, you'll be some way ahead of the game, I suspect.

Then the trick is to stop thinking and start typing, of course.

David Lodge's the Art of Fiction features a delightful novelist and professor writing short essays explaining how different passages taken from classic works display various writing tactics. Maybe not perfect for a beginner in the practical sense but very inspirational, by way of pointing out brilliant things people have done.

These recommendations are great: many thanks once again!
