The first of the Krazy Kat Sunday comics collections

Muy excellent, dude.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup.

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Monday, 27 December 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I got a few cookbooks: One on bread, one on pastries, and one on pickles. Also Moominland Midwinter, which is my first Moomin book.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Big ole French dictionary. I like it a lot because it's French-English-American, so I'm learning things about English English every time I look up a French word! Language is so neeeeet...

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Monday, 27 December 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Encyclopedia of the War of 1812!

Sredni Vashtar, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst

RR (restandrec), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too.

Chronicles: Volume One.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Libra - Delillo
Amazing Adventures of K & K - Chabon
A Widow for One Year - Irving
Charming Billy - McDermott

The first two I've read before but it doesn't matter because none of them cost the gift-giver more than $1! They're in excellent condition; the McDermott is hardcover. Yay for library sales. Also, a cookbook called Win Her With Dinner.

W i l l (common_person), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Vertigo by W.G. Sebald and The Peloponnesian War by Thucydides.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The five people you meet in heaven and my 2months old baby Sara got Guess how much I love you by her 6 years old cousin. I'm not sure yet who fared best after all.

misshajim (strand), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin by Gordon S. Wood and Fighting The Forces: What's At Stake In Buffy The Vampire Slayer? by Rhonda V. Wilcox (Editor), David Lavery (Editor).

(Interestingly, both of them have been reviewed at Amazon.com by the prolific Robert W. Moore. I need to meet this guy.)

David Bannister (David Bannister), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists" - Gideon Defoe (An offbeat parody of pirates - haven't read it yet, but have enjoyed the Pirate Captain blog by the author and someone else, which prompted me to buy it)

"Rude Kids - The Story of Viz" - Chris Donald (Enjoyable for the first half, then as the comic begins its long, slow decline the book becomes increasingly depressing, ending up with Donald basically having a breakdown)

"Motion Picture Purgatory" - Rick Trembles (Amazing cult film review book done in the form of comic strips)

"Both" - Tom Gould and Simone something or other (Collection of two issues of comic book series (first is called "First", second is called "Second"), some lovely quirky writing and cute, simple artwork)

Also the latest Guinness Book of Records. It has horrid pictures of that woman who bulges out her eyes and a 2500 year old corpse, which made me feel ill.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

A package arrives, and a friend has sent me "Wormwood" by Ron Silliman and "Country Girl" by Hannah Weiner: I am overjoyed!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't get any gifts :-(

Fred (Fred), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what you get for worshipping Baal.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I got three Maigret detective novels by George Simenon. This makes me so happy it is slightly disturbing.

I also got a book on language and its history. My mother got it used somewhere online and it is encrusted with strange filth. It is still in readable condition, but I may be to disturbed to actually open it.

sdownes, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Got a mixed bunch of books including

* Snow by Orhan Pamuk
* A collection of Philip Marlowe stories by Raymond Chandler
* White Mughals by William Dalrymple
* Rivers of Gold by Hugh Thomas
* Library: An Unquiet History by Matthew Battles
* Jonathon Strange & Dr Norrell by Susanna Clarke

People seem to know they can't go far wrong by giving me books

dinadan26, Thursday, 30 December 2004 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I mostly got cookbooks, The Slow Mediterranean Kitchen, Irish Desserts, Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles cookbook, and the Gourmet monstrosity. Of course I bought myself several books for Christmas, including The Siege of Krishnapur by J. G. Farrell and The Living End by Stanley Elkin.

Jessa (Jessa), Sunday, 2 January 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck Klosterman, Sex, Drugs & Cocoa Puffs. He's often wrong, but when he's right he's on it (e.g. his observation that all of Generation X was formed by The Empire Strikes Back, that Luke Skywalker is exactly Winona Ryder's character in Reality Bites except she's hotter).

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 2 January 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

  • Robert Service's Lenin - A Biography

  • Jessica Stern's Terror In The Name Of God
  • Also got a lovely pair of big English to Norwegian and Norwegian to English dictionaries.

    Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Sunday, 2 January 2005 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists" - Gideon Defoe (An offbeat parody of pirates

Hey, I got this book too. Because my brother's girlfriend's friend ghost wrote it (or some of it at least). And I got another book about pirates.

Fundamentally my family hasn't got the hang of asking me if there are any books I would like and then buying them for me. It's kind of annoying, given that I spend all of December fielding phone calls from members of my family asking me what they should buy each other, but then no-one rings Bloke to find out what I want. Eediots.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Sunday, 2 January 2005 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't get any books off Santa, but I did take two books back to Waterstone's today. They were 'How To Get a Job You'll Really Love' and 'How to Edit' or something. I wish I could take 'The Seven Basic Plots' back but it was mail order.

The Three Kings are coming to our house on Jan 6, so I live in hope.

    Puddin'Head Miller (PJ Miller), Sunday, 2 January 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The Book on the Bookshelf (Vintage)
    Villain's Guide to Better Living
    Love Songs from the Man'Yoshu
La Cucina: A Novel of Rapture
Ardor : A Novel of Enchantment
Lucrezia Borgia: Life, Love And Death In Renaissance Italy
    Seven Japanese Tales
    The Key (Vintage International)
The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists : A Novel

yesabibliophile (yesabibliophile), Monday, 3 January 2005 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

accentmonkey, you should casually let everyone know that you have an Amazon wishlist set up for Bloke, so that he knows what to get you (even if he already knows what to get you). Then they can call him and ask what's on it. Maybe. Worked for me this year - Solaris, The Algebraist, A Box of Matches, The Chronoloths, The Man Without Qualities. (one of these kids is doing his own thing, three of these kids are kind of the same...)

Ray (Ray), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

You are right Ray. This new year, I resolve to ensure that I only get books and DVDs I want for Christmas next year.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

    I got:
Mischief Night by Roddy Lumsden (from boy)
Brick Lane by Monica Ali (from family friend)
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides (from friend - already read it but will do again)
something about tambourines? and another paperback (from friend - can't remember what they are offhand as I was drunk when she gave them to me and they are now buried in my mess somewhere)

I was pleased that I didn't get very many this year, I don't tend to keep books around that long, except poetry.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't tend to keep books around that long, except poetry

The great thing about books as presents for me is that I can read them, keep them if I like them, and donate them to my shop if I don't. That way nothing's wasted.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah... but I always worry that people might get offended if I give their gifts away. I do it anyway, but...

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

For the first time in memory I didn't get any books for Christmas. How are you supposed to celebrate the birth of The Jesus without Alan Hollinghurst or Jared Diamond? So I went out and bought Derrick Jensen's The Culture of Make Believe, which I'm enjoying thoroughly. A few days later my wife bought me a Moleskine Notebook, which was easily as good as one of those books with words between the covers.

I'm still holding out hope for Hollinghurst and Diamond books to magically appear in my backpack.

palinode (palinode), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

    I got three books:

Never Hit a Jellyfish with a Spade
    Havoc in its Third Year
    Mr Norrell and Jonathan Strange

All of them are chock-a-block full of spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and so on.

    Happy Christmas my arse!

SRH (Skrik), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Like David Bannister, I also received a copy of Gordon Wood's "The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin," as well as "The Complete Far Side" -- a must-have for anybody who read the comics pages in the 1980s.

Mark Klobas, Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

    A Cook's Tour
    The Wine List 2005
    Cod

Bit of a busman's holiday, really. I had to spend my own money on the collected Barry MacSweeney.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 6 January 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Most people know better than to give me books, since I'm surrounded by enough already, and they're likely to give me one I already own. Even so, for the holidays I was given Schott's Sporting, Gaming and Idling Miscellany, which was one we didn't have.

I also made a trip to the Birkenhead Waterstone's in the sales and picked up Sarah Waters' Fingersmith, John Motson's football trivia book, and Jamie's Dinners (don't laugh; it was half price). I also bought a non-fiction book whose name I forget, but which in the first chapter seemed to blame Margaret Thatcher for 9/11. I was really hoping to find some books I couldn't get in America, and this was the closest I got.

I'm disappointed I didn't stick around longer: Murakami's new book was released there today, and won't be out here until the 18th. Boo.

    zan, Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

    Freedom Evolves, Daniel C. Dennett
I bought it for myself with gift money, so it still counts.

The Penland Book of Handmade Books: Master Classes in Bookmaking Techniques, Jane LaFerla and Veronika Alice Gunter, eds.
When I opened this one, I think I may have squealed with glee. I received this from my MIL, whose husband's brother has a few samples featured. Quite fun.

    sparkle j (sparkle j), Sunday, 9 January 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

So, Matt, are you a cook?

Palinode, I have just finished Hollinghurst, which makes a change.

I guess that for Motson, it's not trivia.

the bellefox, Monday, 10 January 2005 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

    Of sorts, in training.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Motson's subtitle is "The Greatest Football Trivia Book Ever"... but, yes, I'm sure it's not trivia to him at all. I bought the book for the husband, but I've found it really interesting myself.

    zan, Wednesday, 12 January 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The 2004 Da Capo Best Music Writing book

Dave Eggers, How We Are Hungry: Stories (my first impression was, huh, I would never have picked this up on my own, and maybe I will hate it, as Eggers often annoys me, but at least it might be interesting) (I reckon my dad just remembers me talking about Eggers/McSweeney's a couple years ago)
