A friend of mine (girl) is going to do her Masters in Forensic Science. She doesn't read much but likes crime thrillers and Agatha Christie. Can you suggest some books she might be interested in?

I suggest she visit the blog of Sarah Weinman
http://www.sarahweinman.com/
who just finished her master's in forensic science and is very knowledgeable about crime fiction (she writes for various newspapers and magazines). There is a link for sending email.

what's thrilling about gravity's rainbow?

It's not thrilling, but it is a thriller, generically, I think.

The poor dear. (Yes, I am just jealous of Crichton's millions.)

I would suggest Conan Doyle.

The Cuckoo's Egg by Clifford Stoll.

what's thrilling about gravity's rainbow?
I was being a little ironic in my seconding, perhasp to compensate for some overhate (or rather tone down my message)on the Gravity's Rainbow thread, and perhaps the pinefox was doing something similar, but I'll bet lovers of the book do view it as a science thriller.

Um, The Double Helix?

richard powers' galatea 2.2 immediately came to mind, but it's nothing like crichton or similar authors.
