I keep seeing these "1001 albums/books/films/etc." books. How about "1001 stupidly subjective lists to read before you die"?

And they all seem to be done by The Guardian

it would be nice if they did this for other books. books always = novels in these things.

Henry Frog (Frogman Henry), Monday, 19 January 2009 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

yeah this is split up weird - v & crying of lot 49 are in crime??

t_g, Monday, 19 January 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

man, the crime list is some bullshit.

the faintly ridiculous taxonomy is the best part — in addition to 'crime', 'love', and 'comedy', coming up are 'family and the self', 'state of the nation', and 'war and travel', of which i'm not sure is the most ridiculous.

thomp, Monday, 19 January 2009 18:59 (sixteen years ago)

wtf this list is awful

love how "crime" encompasses Ian Fleming, Jurassic Park, and... Crime and Punishment

Tropic of Cancer and Lolita under "love"

the hits just keep on coming

comedy list needs a lot more russians and a lot less brits (good call on Leonara Carrington's The Hearing Trumpet, though; that book was as fun as anything I've ever read)

You're not suggesting they could have left out David Madsen's debut novel, Memoirs of a Gnostic Dwarf, are you?
