Simenon, c/d?

I've recently found sound George Simenon books that, judging by the cover, look pretty interesting. Is he good? If so, which are his best books?

We got set L'homme de Londres as an exam translation text when I was at uni - we had all year to study the book and would then be set a random passage to translate in the exam. Fortunately for us, they picked the first two paragraphs of chapter one, which was pretty much all I and most of the other students had ever read. And it's still all I've ever read, sorry!

The world's most prolific author, apparently. I have all the Maigret books, but in Norwegian translation. I haven't read him in English. I like the Maigret books.

They're OK... but as charming a policier as Maigret may be, I prefer my detectives amateur.

In my opinion, Simenon's best novel is called "La neige était sale" (The snow was dirty).
