You could read the Hell's Angels book.

The Hells's Angels book is a bit less vivid than F&L in LV and it might strike you as a falling off, although the subject matter and the handling are both characteristic of HST. I find the '72 Campaign Trail book just too depressingly OTM to re-read, but I lived through that year, aged 17, so I take it kind of hard.

Hells Angels is a fantastic example of HST's work before he got too old and drug-addled. It is EXACTLY the reason he is credited with the Gonzo Journalism form. He puts himself squarely in the narrative by living with the Hells Angels on their runs.

after "hell's angels," try "the great shark hunt" - it includes most of his best writing, good stuff on nixon/watergate as well as a bunch of his early non-gonzo journalism. proves he could really write even without the drugs.

Try the first of the two volumes of letters. Anyone know when the third volume is due? -AW

I'd suggest Fear & Loathing on the compaign trail. You'll not find a more honest account of big time politics anywhere.

Proud Highway (the letters Vol. 1) seconded.
