Hey, aside from the Strand, does anyone have good recommendations for second hand bookstores in New York?? Any tips (esp. places w/ good academic selections) would be greatly appreciated :)

There's a few listed here. http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/features/23933/what-the-guidebooks-wont-tell-you
There's also a used bookstore on Mercer Street and one in Brooklyn Heights that used to be on Montague Street that moved across Atlantic I think. There was one over near Avenue A on St. Marks maybe, but haven't been there in a while, don't know if it is still there. But for academic stuff, even used, you probably have to go to, say, the NYU bookstore or the old school Barnes & Noble on 17th and Broadway.

You would have wanted Labyrinth, but they pulled out of Manhattan. Their web site is running fine.

St. Mark's Bookshop is still there. That's new academic and literary stuff and some remainders.

Spoonbill & Sugartown on Bedford in Williamsburg is my favorite non-Strand place.

Westsider rare and used books:
2246 Broadway
(between 80th St & 81st St)
New York, NY 10024

(212) 362-0706

great place for a variety of cheap used books.

Yeah. Didn't they leave a store there with a different name, Book Culture or something? With reduced inventory, no doubt.

St. Mark's Bookshop is nice.

I have a sort of love/hate relationship w/Westsider Books (xpost) but have bought couple dozen used paperbacks there over the last few years.

Yes, you're right: http://www.bookculture.com. I haven't been to the new version though.

New York is not great for used books. I like Mercer Street Books, just above Houston, P.S. Bookshop in DUMBO and The Community Bookstore in Cobble Hill.

Book Culture seems almost exactly like Labyrinth and they still carry lots of remaindered academic titles.

Yeah, that's where I used to live -- no discernible difference with the change to Book Culture. This is right by Columbia, though, of course, so used inventory is not really general, it's more course-contingent.
