You should check out Iliad Books in North Hollywood posthaste. And if you're on the westside, Alias Books on Sawtelle near Santa Monica is a good small bookstore.

This is a joke, right? Of course you can buy books here - it's a silly question; sorry.

There's Duttons both in Beverly Hills and Brentwood; Skylight Books in Los Feliz; Book Soup in West Hollywood; Vromans in Pasadena; Equator Books in Venice; and on and on and on ...

Acres of Books in Long Beach is worth the trip for a huge used selection.

there's this fantastic used bookstore--the name of which escapes me--in Venice on Abbott-Kinney that unfortunately has the caveat of being horribly overpriced.

Also, Brand Bookshop on Brand Ave. in Glendale. And Counterpoint Books and Records on Franklin, near Bronson.

I just moved right near Skylight books. Goodbye, budget.

When you're at the beach, check out Small World Books on the Venice boardwalk, especially for the mystery section.

Dutton's in Brentwood is the weirdest bookstore I've ever been in. Spread out over several separate rooms/floors in a sort of minimall. The books are crammed into the shelves, making browsing a challenge. And this one guy who works there, OMG, he starts these intense literary monologues with every customer. Actually that's what I was like back in my record store days come to think of it.

there's this great bookshop i just discovered right across the street from brand books in glendale. i think it's called bookfellows? friendly staff, pretty good prices, all used books, tons of sci-fi and mystery.

Seconding Acres Of Books in Long Beach (which is my fave book store in all of Southern California. It's directly opposite the Long Beach Blvd. station on the Blue Line so no one has an excuse not to go.

Also be sure to check out Koma Books on 7th St. - it's the second/third generation of the old Amok store that used to be on Hyperion (and later Hillhurst) back in the day.

Book'Em Mysteries in South Pasadena is a great detective/mystery specialty store too.

Thank god L.A. still has access to the internet and UPS.

When I was there last summer, the Barnes & Noble in downtown Santa Monica actually had a few clearance carts worth of miscellaneous, mostly out-of-print, really interesting books (many art books) for a few bucks each.

Morbs: Book Soup in West Hollywood is good, if not too different from any top-notch indie bookseller.

Multiple posts, but I'll just say that one thing I loved about book-browsing in Pasadena a while ago was all of the actual paper screenplays for sale in a few used bookstores. (This was '98, before they were on-line.)

Also, I really love Bart's Books, an hour to the north, in Ojai:
