cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Your name is not Cozen :-(

I will read it, soon.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

I should get him to change that, soon.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

All my stuff is of such a high quality. I wouldn't know where to start.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Everyone should read this one though. I even mention Barbara Pym!:

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Ha, that's a fantastic review, Scott. It's high-conceptish but actually talks about the music, imagine!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Sort of sheepishly posting this, as it desperately needs a rewrite -- so overwritten and elbow-to-the-ribs in places it makes my skin crawl, but hopefully, after I put it back on the old anvil for a while, it will make a decent foundation myth for my second novel...

Scott, I love that review. "Blazing Arrow" is one of my favorite albums of the 21st century.

dylan (dylan), Friday, 8 April 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

Of assorted thing lurking around the Web, I'm kind of fond of this one -- which is, jesus, almost six years old now. Where do the time go?

Here is some middle-aged juvenilia with an outdated profile:

It is bad, but there you are.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 8 April 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

I always forget that you are scott seward.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 8 April 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

Hi Dylan! Post some of your stuff. Go ahead, don't be shy.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 8 April 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

Well, all right. http://www.citypages.com/databank/25/1244/article12525.asp

dylan (dylan), Friday, 8 April 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I read that el-p article a long while ago (linked to on ILM) and thought "hot damn" back then too.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 8 April 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

I really like that, Dylan. I love reading about people like that. People like the biographer AND his subject! Must be tough to find Flandrau books.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 8 April 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

I like your story, Ann! Not that it won't be better than some polish, but it's funny and I'm jealous of people who can write well in that folktale/myth style.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 April 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Loved that piece Dylan: very touching combination of content and style.

Ann: I, too, admire a person's ability for that freewheeling highwire act--it's stuff that I can only think about doing, ie., it never makes its way down to the pen. So, is that an indication of the novel's style?

David Joyner (David Joyner), Saturday, 9 April 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

Let's go, shrinking violets! I want more!

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 9 April 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

sheesh, now i've scared everyone away. good going, scott.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 9 April 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Aw, thanks for reading through the stumbles, guys. Yeah, the story posted above sort of reflects the novel's overall style -- but that's going to be the most mythical part, as it's back story. It's the origin myth of the protagonist's father; the protagonist will be half-god, and therefore touched with a bit of that religious aura, but he'll also be presented as an *adolescent* half-god, so there should be room for more genuine, less politically heavy-handed, humor in the rest of the book.

But first I gotta finish editing the one I'm on, which is much more straightforwardly humorous, so it's harder in some ways but easier in others. (In other words, the fucker is killing me but me loves him.)

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Sunday, 10 April 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

While interesting enough on its own (I liked the trick he did with describing the crying woman's facial contortions before letting us know what the hell he was describing)Joyner's piece above had the added perk of forcing me to register on the Age web page. Had never read it before, for shame, Ann!

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for your comments, Ann. Am flailing around at home trying to think of another piece for The Age, unless you get in before me, as well as negotiating the embryonic stage of a novel: have at least got a draft of the first chapter, but am trying not to be such a loser and write consecutive chapters.

David Joyner (David Joyner), Monday, 11 April 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

DARE I?

Beware, it's dumb.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Monday, 11 April 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Keep plugging, Joyner. Every chapter you write turns into kind of a petri dish for growing the next one (I can't imagine being the kind of novelist who writes an outline BEFORE letting the characters run around for a bit -- must be nice to have such a perfect brain).
