i got to page 28 in Marylinne Robinson's
Housekeeping today when it leaped to page 157.
"Oh she's playing some formal games here"
it actually took me another 3 or 4 pages to realise it was their mistake not mine (even though page 157 starts mid sentence and it's facing page, 28, appears to be the end of the first chapter.

i don't know if there's a question here but it gave me a bit of a jolt.

...but i suppose, in fact, that the surprising thing is that it doesn't happen more often. books a complicated things and printing houses must be very papery.

Books are made of folios, often of 32 pages. You got a copy where they slipped in the wrong folio in the wrong place. I've had or seen a few books with feature.
("Folios" might be the wrong term, but it's late and I have a headache.)
