If you don't want to read my nonsense, here are some details:

If you do, here goes. A "swish", I'm told, is a kind of organised swap-meet (the organisation and the rules are to be found by clicking on that link). There have been a couple of really quite successful / enjoyable swishes at this venue in the past 6 months or so, one for clothes and one for records. Now the same people (Meg, Mrs. Carsmile and some of her friends) are organising one for BOOKS!

I think the book swish could be really good, particularly if a bunch of people with interesting taste in books comes along! Hence, I thought you lot might like to know about it.

My involvement is that I help to run a weekly Sunday afternoon hangout downstairs at the Lexington (the swish is upstairs) called The Hangover Lounge (http://hangoverlounge.co.uk). We have a policy that the music must be kept at a volume which does not interfere with conversation, and must not hurt a sore head. It's quite a good place to curl up with a book and a beer on a Sunday, if you like that kind of thing. Anyway, I'll likely be DJing and drinking. Come and say hello if you're there, but eb prepared to talk about Torgny Lindgren.

The Lexington is on the corner of Pentonville Road and Penton Street, about halfway between Angel and King's Cross.

four weeks pass...

Bringing in 6-7 paperbacks, just need to make it.

Bit last min but if any ILB-ers come along (this includes me) we could make a FAP out of this.

Hope you can make it, Julio, and indeed anyone else reading. There's nothing better than a Sunday afternoon pint and a natter.

Thanks for bumping this Tim, I completely forgot.

Thanks to people who came - I thought it went really well. I dropped off 6-7ish and came away with two. JLB's "Fictions" and Mishima's "The Sound of Waves" - which is described as a "timeless love story"! I lol-ed.

Also very glad that someone took away my Father Brown anthology. If that "mild-mannered cleric" had stayed in my house for much longer I would have thrown it out of the window in irritation!

I came away with a Raymond Radiguet in NYRB, and a Leonardo Sciscia. Both donated by Julio, predictably!

I too thought it was really good, and a net loss of 13 books represents a total result for me.

Came away with Cherokee by Jean Echenoz. Donated by Tim, Predictably!

The Sound of Waves was another one of mine!

Loss of 6 books, very much compensated by the wonderful convo, music and drink.
