thomp, Sunday, 8 May 2011 20:03 (fourteen years ago)

when would we start doing this? i was planning on starting to read either middlemarch or vanity fair sometime in the next week or two; i am not sure how this influences my voting decision

thomp, Sunday, 8 May 2011 20:04 (fourteen years ago)

*Looks at calendar* end of June or thereabouts...

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 8 May 2011 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

guys don't read mansfield park

horseshoe, Sunday, 8 May 2011 21:28 (fourteen years ago)

Don't really think we need to do two contemporary New York set ones in a row, so that's Cole and Dee out...

ledge, Sunday, 8 May 2011 22:16 (fourteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Just made my choice. Hope there'll be quite a lot of votes and a choice for us all to get on with.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Saturday, 28 May 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

Not published in the UK til August?

Stevie T, Sunday, 29 May 2011 00:00 (fourteen years ago)

we can read vanity fair in the meantime, then

thomp, Sunday, 29 May 2011 00:28 (fourteen years ago)

*sigh* I should look at things like publishing dates in future polls, looks like we'll have to push out the next group read till September time

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 29 May 2011 09:13 (fourteen years ago)

It is gettable at least - I've got it on my shelf!

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 29 May 2011 10:55 (fourteen years ago)

25 votes is excellent, btw.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 29 May 2011 10:55 (fourteen years ago)

should ada win by default?

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Sunday, 29 May 2011 13:48 (fourteen years ago)

no, because i meant to vote for vanity fair and then didn't. i think.

thomp, Sunday, 29 May 2011 14:58 (fourteen years ago)

re-poll? I would've like to have nominated something else actually (but, the more we nominate, the less consensus we'll get, of course).
I'm not to psyched to read Vanity Fair. It's just looks ... long. Not saying long is bad, but it just means that I wouldn't have as much time to read other books I've planning to read.
Ada maybe, but it's not the first Nabakov on my to-read list (still haven't gotten to Pale Fire).

Romeo Jones, Sunday, 29 May 2011 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

Can't Brits just source the book from the US? I've ordered books from US Amazon before without any problems. (Or has that changed?) And if you have a Kindle I've been told it's fairly easy to change your registered location so you can order from the US.

frankiemachine, Sunday, 29 May 2011 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

I'm sure I just got mine from UK amazon Used & New section - only difference was it took ten days or so to arrive.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 29 May 2011 17:47 (fourteen years ago)

Postage-free ordering with 22% discount (currently) from here: http://www.bookdepository.com/Open-City-Teju-Cole/9781400068098

Pleased about 25 votes - good core group.

re-poll? I would've like to have nominated something else actually (but, the more we nominate, the less consensus we'll get, of course).

I would always restrict to about 10 options, btw.

I order bks through my local library but I'll have a look at amazon in that case. Shouldn't postpone as it surely is quite easy to order. James - what's the '66 days to go' note about? Is it the time it would take between order and arrival?

Published on my bday so could get someone to buy this for me. :-)

xyzzzz__, Monday, 30 May 2011 11:45 (fourteen years ago)

the 66 days to go is when it actually comes out in the uk

just sayin, Monday, 30 May 2011 11:56 (fourteen years ago)

oh bah.

England's banh mi army (ledge), Monday, 30 May 2011 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

Don't mind that as NY stories don't interest me at all (apart from Hubrt Selby's Last Exit... ;-)), its the only way I'll read 'em.

ok, lets set it for June, w/c 27th if that's ok - guess uk-ers (includes me) can catch up if they can't do amazon. I'll watch out for publishing dates in future ones.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 30 May 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

James - what's the '66 days to go' note about?

That's weird. Here it says 'Usually dispatched within 48 hours'

You're fucking fired and you know jack shit about horses (James Morrison), Monday, 30 May 2011 23:15 (fourteen years ago)

Like I said, mine took maybe ten days to arrive (sent by seller in the US iirc)
