Pagination Staination

Was just curious to know if anyone else ever feels guilty about spilling things on books. It's like somehow you taint all the beautiful words and images and characters. Books are like living creatures and it is not hard to feel sorry for the poor things. I particularly pity the books in public libraries. Alternatively, if one thinks of novels as collective artefacts, then the marking of them is part of their life-story, and besides, one can always purchase a new unblemished copy. Such are the delights of consumer culture.

Books I've read in winter often have cocoa stains somewhere, not big spilled blobs but little thumbprints in the margins. And I'm always dropping ash in the gutters. But mostly I tell myself I'll remember having read this book in winter, perched on the window sill to smoke with mug of cocoa in hand. After all, I'm just as much a living thing as the book is and by reading it I'm weaving its contents into my own life. It's only fair for me to leave a few marks of my own.

No re-purchasing the unblemished unless I've completely ruined the book & pages are falling out or something.

I managed to spill a load of fake blood over the first couple of pages of The Rebel, but it's transparent so it's fine. I got curry sauce on a book once. Not library books though.

In my city's University library there's a note in Anthony Burgess' book on James Joyce that claims to be written by Burgess himself whilst visiting. I like to think it's real.

All my Famous Fives books have splatters of blood from youthful nose-bleeds and picked scabs.

Why didn't those librarians just throw the book in a garbage can? What was their problem?

i spilled strawberry soda on one of my copies of 'being and time'. i think that's the only thing i've spilled on, though.

i was proud of it when it happened.
