Invitation to Thurs night reading in NYC

If anyone's interested, a friend of mine is doing a reading at McNally Robinson bookstore this evening, at 7 pm. His name: Paul Clemens. His book: Made in Detroit: A South of 8-Mile Memoir. Your mission: Come and meet Paul and Jeff Eugenides (who's introducing him) and have conflicted feelings for Detroit like the rest of us.

I don't feel articulate enough to properly plug the book here, but Paul's a dear and has secretly expressed concern that no one will come. This is obv ridiculous because the book's gotten good reviews (except possibly not in the Times BR? I didn't see it but I know he was worried) and because Doubleday are a PUBLICITY MACHINE that never falters, but here's your chance to meet a future literary figure.

I may be sneaking in since Paul's slightly embarassed to be seen by his friends playing "important author person" but we'll see how that goes.

Did 2000 miles not stand between myself and McNally Robinson bookstore, I'd attend. Good luck to your friend tonight.

That place is my new favorite bookstore! I don't know if I can make it, but I'll try.

Didn't make it, laurel. How'd it go?

Thanks for remembering, Ken! It was great, being a Very Important Author is a heady thing for a boy from Detroit and it's an enduring pleasure to watch one's friends get used to success. We all just beamed at him from the back row, people in the audience asked "questions" that were just thinly veiled monologues about their own lives (which the publicist warned us would be the case, apparently hardly anyone ever asks an honest QUESTION), Paul was funny throughout. AND I got to chat up Jeff Eugenides, which -- how could that be wrong?!?

And it couldn't have happened to a nicer bookstore, I must say. I may join you in semi-residence there I'm so impressed.

Why do you have conflicted feelings for Detroit and what is '8-mile'?
