AVG REVIEW: * 1/2
May 13, 2009 Julie rated it *One of the most boring books I have ever read. I like egyptian history, mythology, and folklore but I just could not get into this story, I had to push myself to finish it.

Not impressed. Sure, West is good with words, but there's not enough story to make this book interesting. The pharaoh was obsessed with the afterlife - that's basically all you need to know.
Xarah rated it * Shelves: historical-fictionWhile I tend to love anything Egyptian, I had a hard time getting into this book. I picked this book up mainly because I hadn't read any fiction set in this time period (4th Dynasty). I had the hardest time getting into the story, and, while reading, paying attention to what I was reading.

sympathies to xarah, as "reading, paying attention to what I was reading" tends to be my main difficulty as well.
also intrigued by this book - have you read it, the late great?
who do you lean more towards - Julie or the Washington Post?

i've read it once
i'm rereading it with the life of delius in mind, i hadn't really looked into it. there are some episodes in the book which may mirror some of delius experiences or ideas, so i'm rereading for that.
i lean toward the washington post, i am reading it out loud one chapter at a time though, the language and ideas are super dense.

it's a strenuous effort, reading five different streams of consciousness, each in some made up weird vernacular, sometimes it's scribbled notes, sometimes it's thoughts, sometimes actual chapters w stuff happening. it's a heady mix.

Is this the same guy that wrote The Rat Man of Paris? Cos I read that a looong time ago and remember enjoying it quite a bit.
