Random thoughts: Lazlo and Knausgaard I'd probably read anyway. Amis and Smith aren't something I'd pick up so I think I'd go for either of them, at first.

- From the description of the Knausgaard he sounds a lot like I think Amis sounds like. Maybe more clued-up but who knows.

- Amis would be hilarious in this ILB era post-Capital and all, but I don't know if I just want spend my time taking the piss. And we've read enough things where we've spent time spewing bile. Might be good to have a mix. Then again it might not.

- The Smith would be too London-centric, not sure our American colleagues would be engaged enough for it.

I've never tried Smith, there's always something off-putting about her that I can't quite grasp. Yet I've read essays that I loved, and an intriguing extract or two from this, so I vote NW.

yeah I liked a couple of essays in the last collection more than the two novels I've read

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:26 (twelve years ago)

Knausgaard. Feel like I should look into him; have read the Amis, have a different Krasznahorkai on the shelf, & not interested enough in NW really, def not while it's still only in hardback.

woof, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:31 (twelve years ago)

Ah yes of course - the dreaded hardback!

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:33 (twelve years ago)

oh ffs the knausgaard is still only in hardback too. think i might be too cheap to join in this time around, but I'll do some library checking on whatever wins.

The Knausgård is a paperback; I'm not sure Archipelago even produce hardbacks?

I picked Krasznahorkai, which I've been looking forward to . Smith and Amis don't look at all appealing, and it's simply too damn soon to try the Knausgård, thanks to living through three years of constant media chatter about it.

Happy with whatever really, he said listlessly.

I bent the corner of the page, he said doggedly.
