Okay, so I like Fforde's books - A LOT - even though I tend to feel quite illiterate and idiotic for not getting most of the literary references. But I must say that I also love his book jackets and really wish that he'd come-out with a poster (or t-shirt) with this image:

No, he's staggeringly awful. That cover isn't bad though.

I don't know that he's brilliant, but I find his stuff quite enjoyable, for whatever that's worth :) Just entertaining escapism, for the most part.

Some of his dialogue and word play is excellent, and I'm partial to a terrible pun or two, so he's a fairly entertaining read.

I read the first three Thursday Next books and enjoyed each one slightly less than the previous one, it seems he forgets his way a lot and just muddles through the plot to see where he ends up.

I know it's supposed to be surreal and silly but I struggle to get my head around "established characters from classic books as real people in Fforde books acting as other characters in non-existant books and/or alternative versions of classic books."

I've just started The Big Over Easy (£3 paperback from Monseur le Fopp, who really is spoiling us), but it's in a different cover from the one above.

That first image is a serious spoiler btw. I'm about 40% of the way through and there's no mention of Humpty being shot.

I have a long rant somewhere about how you'd think he'd get the plot of Jane Eyre right before writing The Eyre Affair (and yes, I know there's an in-story explanation, but the plot is wrong even when that is taken into account), but I won't bore you with it.

That cover reminds me of a preview of Bill Willingham's Fables spin-off comic, where Humpty (or some relative) has a literal ass-crack.
