Seeking holiday reading suggestions

I need some suggestions for what to read whilst on holiday. I'm travelling round Morocco for two weeks. I'm looking for a decent work of fiction to keep me occupied on long bus journeys etc. Some requirements: needs to be long, needs to be well written but not overly wordy highbrow, preferrably contemporary, a page turner, dont mind generic - crime, sci-fi, not fantasy or horror though, has some connection to bigger ideas - philosophy/religion/theology/history, anything set in North Africa.
Thanks

Perdido Street Station. I find I have a tolerance for Mieville on holiday that I can't quite muster at other times.
