I would like access to 77 pls. I used to be Jon Lewis and am still Jon Lewis.
― demonic mnevice (Jon Lewis), Sunday, 19 July 2015 17:28 (nine years ago) link
It wasn't intentional, and it is private again. Best idea of why Old Lunch now has access is this, from stet: a couple of big ILE threads must have been moved to 77 at one time, and the user migration thing that runs when you make a board private has added everyone who posted on them to 77.

Okay cool. Thanks for the reassurance emil.y!

Oh, okay. I don't know what thread it might've been, but that makes sense. I promise to use my unintentional addition to the 77 ranks responsibly.

Popular Misconceptions About 77:
• It is a private board for elites. Anyone with a registered ILX username can request access. Entrance is granted by mods as long as the request isn't made by a bot or a spammer or someone who appears to be malicious.
• It is a private board. Board 77 is hidden from Google searches and links to it do not automatically show thread titles. I can post a wacky screencap of my racist cousin's Facebook account without him somehow doing an image search on his own profile and finding it. I can post things like my work phone number – (501) 433-1037 – and not worry too much about some poor schmoe actually calling it up to receive an ass-kicking.
But what I can't prevent is anyone granted access to 77 taking that information and distributing it back out into the world wide web. The limited access to 77 grants ILXors reasonable safety from having sensitive material stumbled upon by outsiders, but does not protect them from having that information seep through the cracks anyway.
― pplains, Sunday, 19 July 2015 17:56 (nine years ago) link
I'll tell you one thing, 77 is 10x safer than anything you've ever posted on to your Facebook account.
― pplains, Sunday, 19 July 2015 17:58 (nine years ago) link
Thanks pp. that's a good summary.

Yes all those things pp said are true and evident to anyone that isn't a moron but prob worth stating in the current climate of having actual moderators not get it
― wins, Sunday, 19 July 2015 19:55 (nine years ago) link
btw, calling pplains at work right now to get an ass-kicking
― you are extreme, Patti LuPone. (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 19 July 2015 20:08 (nine years ago) link
It is a private board for elites.
"... gawker's argument is that elites come in all shapes and sizes, and regardless of being under the public spotlight this is still a person who thrives in the criminal capitalist market & deserves to be pegged down a notch (however possible)."

Hi. I'm a mostly-lurker whose only contributions of note to ILX is a) voting in the Comic Strip poll for the comics that cop the most scorn from sic, and b) for coming third in the most recent season of Marvel Puzzle Quest for ILX's alliance.
Can I please be provided access to 77?
― Vernon Locke, Monday, 20 July 2015 08:09 (nine years ago) link
Anyone with a registered ILX username can request access.
In that case may I have access, please. No malicious intent, just curiosity after seeing constant references to it.
― dubmill, Monday, 20 July 2015 12:12 (nine years ago) link
Sometimes I think about posting but most of the time I just lurk ILX. Am very curious about 77 and would love to gain access (though I would understand if you guys are a bit careful right now).

^^ just out of curiousity, is there a way to determine whether this is happening? if someone says "hey i'm a longtime lurker but just started posting" when really they are an old timer posting under false pretenses?

― balls, Monday, 20 July 2015 20:51 (nine years ago) link

Out of curiosity, pplains, where did this come from, because it's new to me and not the way (as a mod) I understand the 77 rules?

Especially the first paragraph - lots of new/recent/unknown posters get blocked.

that requests are sometimes denied is not proof that it's not easy to get in, because it is, provided you're not brand new/suspicious
it's been a long time now, but iirc this policy changed as a result of someone (probably continually and with disregard) posting 77 content on non-77 threads. a mod (iirc jjusten) made public all of 77 in retaliation, everyone yelled at him, the mods undid that, and as a result the policy is basically anyone can get in who wants
one imo instructive thing from the max/jordan/77 thread is that, aside from cleaning up spam and such, mods aren't really needed here in a decision-making capacity. in another era, the first several posts of that thread would have led to someone hastily banning max and jordan from the board, which would have led to a 1000-post shitshow. what happened instead is that the community discussed the issue, a couple of important players said their piece, and a rough consensus was reached, with which no one seems to take issue
― usic ally (k3vin k.), Monday, 20 July 2015 21:27 (nine years ago) link
(Nov 3, 2008 fwiw. I'm not brand new, but will cop to suspicious.)

Yeah but someone claims to have lurked since ____ but there's no way to verify lurking, so my q was: are there other ways to determine veracity of such a claim and/or eliminate possibility of false pretenses? My guess is no.

VL I wish my tiny gentle snarking would prompt voters to cast paeans or make cases for or post splendid examples of their choices, not hide deeper in the lurky shadows!

Sure, but (for example) saying "I read and re-read the collections as a kid and enjoyed them" isn't a valid defence when caught by surprise at Murray Ball's misogyny. The work you're doing in that thread is appreciated and informative - I'll be sure to chip in when Penny Arcade wins over Calvin and Hobbes/Hark! A Vagrant.
