Given the recent Gawker piece j0rdan wrote and max defended and given that there are enough semi-prominent posters on ILX who have posted sensitive information on 77, should their access to 77 be revoked?

heavy question imo - I mean, nobody here's famous enough to get them enough clicks to make reporting "so and so said thus and such on a board called 77, here let us explain" worth their while. so it'd be a punitive move, sending the message "you guys pretty nakedly don't care about people's right to privacy, so giving you access to a private board is a bad idea." but OTOH who knows what heights anybody here will eventually climb to, and if somebody did get clickworthy enough to merit a "did you know that the celebrated chef Garu G once obsessed over his gran's flange?" article it seems clear they'd write/and or run it on "well, but we're allowed to" grounds, needlessly exposing both Garu G and his gran to the world beyond.

but this is painful for me because I have liked both these dudes, as I said on the other thread, and I wish they were more interested in reason than elevating the principle of "well, we can" above other, often more important principles.

j0rdan once took one of my ilx posts and put it on deadspin, verbatim without permission. I wrote to him after at the behest of the guy who told me the story, who was not happy but at least suggested he get the name of the location correct. Anyway at the moment it happened I was too stunned to be pissed but split ilx after til recently because it shook me a bit. I could have lost my job, he didn't ask if he could do it (the answer from the unwilling source may have been yes but who knows), never talked to me after, and it was at a tough time for my family personally. Not that people cared abt me more than him on here, he was always a more "valuable" poster to many people I think. I had a smaller niche.

as I said on the other thread this is a worry 77 or no, famous or no, dodgy journalists or no. If anything I think there's more of a taboo/protectiveness around "omg how dare you doxx our beloved [slightly famous person]" whereas in the past when non-famous ppl have had their pseudonymous personal posts reposted elsewhere by scumbags with their real names attached the response was basically "lol should've been more careful m8"

I don't want to overstate it, it blew over within a week. But I don't think my reputation with that guy is at all good anymore, which for someone who is a freelancer is bad news. And it's hard to explain how it was not my fault, really.

The privacy point I was making was not in favor of publishing whatever the fuck you want to about someone with no consequences. It was about white people suddenly finding themselves under the same type of scrutiny minorities get every day of their lives and going "waaaaah I don't like it fix it for me".

77, in the context of ilxor.com, refers to a board that requires an extra permission to be set in order to obtain access. this is designed to keep out the web crawlers of search engines, so that content posted on 77 is not visible to anyone but the ilxors who post there.
