Make there be fewer moderators please

I don't know how many moderators there are, and I don't know how to find out. It does seem like there are a lot of them and that there are a lot of moderator actions taken. This makes me enjoy ILX less. Is it possible to have fewer moderators or to somehow limit their activity?

PS: this has nothing to do with Kate. She is crazy and deserves whatever she gets from the mods.

I personally especially dislike blatant abuse of mod power. Thread locking or post changing for humorous effect are often amusing, but even more disturbing.

then again it's just the internet lighten up dude etc

i thought w1nt3rmut3 was fezaffe

I think there was a guy that used that as his name before. I should put a different email; I've used that one since like 1997 (which is why it's so corny).

Dan I., Saturday, 11 March 2006 00:28 (twenty years ago)

i'm a mod so i'll change it for you. also i'll ban you, k?

No, there should be more. In fact, everyone should be a mod.

1997 was a corny year.

The age of 16 is a corny year.

Dan, which threads and posts do you believe have been locked merely for humourous effect? And which mods are doing that?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Saturday, 11 March 2006 10:37 (twenty years ago)

there's only three active mods on ILE at the mo (me, jim, pash) if you look at the Admin Log. none of the moderation seems OTT in my opinion (at least if it is it's in response to OTT behaviour by certain posters).

ILM is a different fish kettle tho granted. But I got the impression the majority of people were fine with the over-zealous/zero-tolerance approach there now!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Saturday, 11 March 2006 10:48 (twenty years ago)

fezaffe was only "wintermute" for a little while.

The main reason there are a lot of mod actions at the moment is spam. There is a lot of spam these days, especially on ilm.

i love the number of mods myself :)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Saturday, 11 March 2006 11:44 (twenty years ago)

Not everyone likes the overzealousness of the mods.
Perhaps it seems that way as the thread it was discussed on was on the mod request board and not everyone was aware of it.
A few people did say on a thread that they were leaving(thread was deleted btw).

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Saturday, 11 March 2006 12:52 (twenty years ago)

If the number and style of the moderators bothers you and they won't change the number or their moderation style, realistically I think you only have two options:

1) Grin and/or bear it.
2) Stop posting.

Dan that's what this thread was for, wtf. Didn't you just skip a step or something?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 11 March 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm mostly just curious and have a few questions is all. Who appoints moderators? Is it Tom? Are there many more of them than there were, say, 2 years ago? If so, why?

Dan your tone in that post is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 11 March 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Dan, the following people have the ability to appoint moderators:
andrew - site owner
alan, noodles - coders
tom, mark s, sean, teeny, me - site administrators.

ILM has about the same amount of moderators as it did 2 years ago
ILE has a lot less moderators

Most of the other boards have 2 or 3 moderators, I think, though I don't know for sure.

As far as I know, the only 2 boards with a lot of moderators are ILM and the noise board.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 11 March 2006 20:45 (twenty years ago)

cool thx

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 11 March 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

also there is a LOT less abuse of mod powers than years ago. i.e. virtually nothing comedy locked or etc. aside from certain, ahem, occurances, a few weeks ago, there's been nothing that could have been controversial since then except for maybe a few overzealous locks that were quickly removed.

the improved attention to moderation seems to have had a small but noticable impact for the better on ILM already.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 12 March 2006 02:57 (twenty years ago)

I'm still moderating, but don't really have as much time to devote to it as I once did. I tend to only moderate something when someone requests it - and as Steve spends considerably more time here than I do at the moment he's got there first.

I'm coming to the conclusion that the more laissez-faire the approach to moderating is, the better. Pash was right to highlight all that crap from upthread but I don't really agree with the vigilant locking of stupid threads.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 12 March 2006 13:37 (twenty years ago)

"he's USUALLY got there first" is what I meant to say.

So we have EIGHT weak people that won't let me clean up Aja/Dante. What a bunch of WEAK BASTARDS.
