Would you kill yourself if...
Think I'm being a bit feeb but tbh this is unhelpful and I think it might be good if it wasn't a thing

I wasn't sure whether to call yellow alert on that thread, but am certainly thirding Noodle and H.P

Well could help somebody from 18 years ago decide if he's overreacting to not being able to pull. So obviously essential

Okay, enough of you have said to lock it so I will... but I think it's worth a discussion about why people want it to be locked. I get that the topic is upsetting, but I also think that ilx should be a place where we are allowed to have upsetting conversations (and no I don't mean edgelordism or offensive challops, I'm more talking about emotional stuff like this). Is it just that in this case people don't think it's a useful contribution, or is it that you want discussion of suicide completely banned from the boards? As someone who still suffers from SI and depression and has used posting here as an outlet at times, I genuinely think it should be a topic we allow. But that isn't solely my choice to make, I am aware.
― emil.y, Saturday, 9 September 2023 13:47 (one year ago) link
as always emil.y i appreciate the thought you put into these calls
if the original thread was genuine i think its a strange and unhelpful bump
it the original thread wasnt genuine i think its not worth having the title floating around without any actual merit (such as any of your instances offered above would have)
is my thoughts anyway
― close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Saturday, 9 September 2023 13:53 (one year ago) link
not to prejudice the bump or put a burden of too much explanation on anyone who does bump a thread like it, tbc
― close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Saturday, 9 September 2023 13:54 (one year ago) link
i think there are threads for discussing it seriously and that's fine and those threads should exist and this particular thread wasn't that
― School of RAAC (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 9 September 2023 14:03 (one year ago) link
oh and thanks emily

With noodle’s point: serious suicide discussion, (maybe with a tw?) fine. A thread which can make suicide a triviality/butt of a joke, not fine. Not that the op did that, but I think the revive was lending itself to that
― H.P, Monday, 11 September 2023 00:25 (one year ago) link
can we finally, finally lock this misbegotten thread which comes up above the other, older relevant label thread?
Mississippi Records (seriously, fuck them)
this is the more recently revived oneThe thread for discussing the amazing Life Is A Problem comp on MISSISSIPPI records
please? that 1st thread has sucked since day one.

Apologies for reviving that one for the news.
― Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 1 October 2023 04:23 (one year ago) link
Okay, so I'm going to say that I personally will not lock that other thread. Here's my reasoning:
- I know nothing about Mississippi Records but it doesn't seem like the original thread is saying anything libellous or monstrous about them, but rather is just being critical of them.- There doesn't seem to be any racism/sexism/other grossness in it? In fact, from a cursory skim it seems to have a reasonable discussion of otherness and the problems relating to reissuing old and obscure stuff?- There's no rule saying that you have to use an old thread about a topic here. If the 'fuck them' element of the first thread isn't what you want to talk about, and the specific comp isn't what you want to talk about, you can always START A NEW THREAD YOURSELF. Somebody might provide links to the old ones for context but don't read that as saying you have to use them.
So, yeah, that's my stance. If I'm wrong on either of the first two points then I might change my mind, but otherwise the threads stand and it's up to the users, not the mods, to make a thread that they find more useful.

100% agreement with emil.y. I saw the request last night and wasn't inclined to lock it, thought I'd sleep on it and reconsider in October.

It's actually a very interesting thread, if someone feels the title has inspired this latest bout of violence maybe it could be edited.
― Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 1 October 2023 14:41 (one year ago) link
that entire thread is amateurist holding weird grudges and the rest of us arguing with him, I hate that he started it and I hate that it gets used. it's a bad faith thread. I honestly don't understand the mod reasoning here, but OK, I do appreciate the responses.
― out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Sunday, 1 October 2023 16:55 (one year ago) link
One of the owners of the company (and one of their friends) apparently posted on the thread, so presumably they didn't find its existence intolerable.
― Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 1 October 2023 17:03 (one year ago) link
well they were responding to amateurist! the other thing that frustrates me here is that the LIAP thread, like many, became the default thread for discussing the label in spite of originally being about just one album, and it stayed that was for a long time until amateurist decided to be weird and angry.
anyway, point taken that I can just start a new one

and jfc asking for a redundant thread based on personal grudges to be locked does not mean I find it "intolerable" ffs, I didn't ask for deletion
