Appropriate to post sale items on ILX?

Hello all. I did this once before, in 2002 or 2003 I think, but I wasn't sure if it was appropriate to list a few DVDs, CDs, etc. I would like to sell on nü-nü-nü-nü-ILX.

Let me know if you think this is OK and I'll just go on and do it.

there should be one single thread where everyone can offer stuff/sell stuff.

i did actually start a thread for this purpose but might be hard to find.

I'm really uncomfortable with this, for the precedent being set if nothing else. Mostly because there's the slim chance of ILE becoming a place where random people specifically go to flog stuff.

And anyway, it's not like there aren't a million other places on the Internet to post for sale items?

How about a new I Love Selling Stuff board?

That would actually be pretty cool.

I'd have no problem with that, but I'd hate the idea of it creeping onto ILE (or any of the other main boards).

Why have a whole barely active board when you can have a single thread?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 3 July 2006 15:10 (eighteen years ago) link

A board is easier to navigate than a thread, and it's easier to spot a thread going "Buy my PS2 or something". In general I don't like the idea of ILX getting a reputation as a small ads site, which considering what happened to ILM with the YSI thing isn't beyond the realms of possibility. But if people really want it then a separate board is the way to go.

Still begs the question of why you'd want to use ILX anyway.

I think there's a non-trivial difference between posting a link to an offsite sale and selling your stuff directly on the board.

Amateurist, you'd be better off generally NOT going through ILX and just going through eBay or Amazon. You'll make more money and you'll sell things faster and you won't have to deal with people dicking around and trying to talk down your prices or barter you. Post 'em up elsewhere and just link to where you put them up, if you like, or tell people where to find them.

some of this stuff probably won't sell for very much on ebay, and i just don't want the hassle + the fees. i figured it'd be nice to sell it to people i "know" (in a manner of, um, writing). but i take your point. normally i'd use craigslist but this town doesn't have a craigslist.

Stuff's been offered for sale in the past, I know coz' I got a rather good Joe Meek comp. I can see a problem in the future with random googlaz a la YSI but I think it should at least be tried.

A dedicated sale thread that is, not a whole new board.

I'd second the e-bay thingy, you'd be surprised what sells!

There might be legal implications from hosting a selling board anyway. It was an idle thought, not a request, really
