I'm uncomfortable with the notion of Chaki having the final say (no offence intended Chaki). If Jay Blanchard, or his equivalent, was to racially insult a black poster, my guess is he'd be banned pretty fucking quickly. Even if the poster on the receiving end of the insult said "let him stay". It's not just the guy being insulted that has a right to be offended.

Dunno, I think this sets a precedent here and we should maybe talk a bit more about it. I'm hugely, hugely uncomfortable with any situation in which someone uses a racial insult on ILX and gets away with it.

The fact that Jay Blanchard is an odious little shitbag who no one at all would miss if he were to suddenly disappear is neither here nor there.

This is an excellent point, of course. The one thing I hadn't considered, and mea culpa here, this is I think because I've given extra weight to Chaki's viewpoint because as well as being the target of the slur, he's a long-term poster here who I also happen to like a lot. I actually got as far as typing one of the guy's ips (he comes in from a large number of different ones) into the box on the administer site page, before thinking about what Chaki had said...

I've seen a bunch of people calling each other a lot of bad shit here - "fat junkie nutjob", "hurry up and die you walking abortion", "idiotic, obsessive shitheel" are some of the more memorable ones. I've hardly ever seen anyone revert to racial slurs, that's someting I doubt anyone wants to see become commonplace, or acceptable, or no big deal. I must admit, Jed, the way people get all heated and bad-tempered about stuff here sometimes, and the way ppl dogpile on this or that poster really gets me down. I DO think there is a difference between Dom (or someone else) ironically using a word like that in a friendly fashion towards someone he knows versus someone getting raging angry and calling another poster by a racial slur but I do understand the arguments about a slippery slope in that particular instance.

Steve: perhaps the innocuousness of the "Chinaman" for you is a cultural UK/US thing -- I remember recently flipping through the channels and landing on PBS which was airing some Dame Judi Dench sitcom where one of the characters casually used that word.

my guess is people took into account snrub's well known idiocy with the degree to which the term 'chinaman's offensiveness is known (cf. 'oriental', 'celestial') whereas 'ricer' has never to my knowledge been a polite society term for 'asian' (there is some disagreement over whether it is a term for 'asian' at all). had snrub said 'gook', 'slant', 'nip', etc. i would imagine even he wouldn't have been afforded such presumption of innocence/ignorance.

my dad doesn't have a mean bone in his body, but he suffers from old-timey racism, perhaps from growing up in an irish enclave in the bronx.

once my mom almost ran over this kid and he screamed "christ! you almost killed that chinaboy!"
