Wangmann is so clearly a troll, people need to ignore his shit. And IP ban him. And find out where he leaves and burn his house down. And kill all his family. I'm assuming there are no friends.

Everyone's sick of the ILM lists, bro.

three cheers for jim.

benrique (Enrique), Thursday, 26 October 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

What sorts of things are frowned on?

Illiteracy, treating ILM as your personal music bank and forum for piracy, posting of not-safe-for-work pictures, pointless list threads, incessant self-promotion, in short killing music by not talking about it. While not encouraged, moderators will at times take apparently arbitrary action against general idiocy when the signal-noise ratio exceeds their personal sanity threshold. When they do so, this is generally both unfortunate and completely understandable.

You've Had Your Chances (noodle vague), Thursday, 26 October 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 26 October 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

i just don't think it's a particularly nice gesture to make an unnecessary example out of someone who's well-intentioned, convivial and just trying to share and appreciate what was understood as a like-minded love of music. too many politics on this board for it's own good.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 26 October 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

its

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 26 October 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

the thing is i don't preach about my favourite music, i try and discuss things in a balanced, subjective way, respectful of each and everyone's tastes, and i think i'm willing to address all styles and genres. how i've come under scrutiny without having shared anything remotely related to the inner workings of my mind is beyond me.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 26 October 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

It's prolly not a nice gesture but you've been around ILX long enough to realise "nice" isn't often part of its brief, Charlie. Think of it as an editing process: long-time ILMers struggle against the board becoming swamped by certain types of threads. It's supposed to be about discussing music, not making endless, dry, arbitrary lists.

You've Had Your Chances (noodle vague), Thursday, 26 October 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

plus in practice these lists tend to fail to generate decent discussion even tho they may often promise or at least suggest it in theory.

;_; (blueski), Thursday, 26 October 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

I think we should have a 'No List November' with rigorous moderation.

;_; (blueski), Thursday, 26 October 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

hahahaha that could be a scrolling thing across the top of every page.

i'm sure someone knows how to make it happen.

benrique (Enrique), Thursday, 26 October 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

point taken, though i think you should be equally wary of posts that cynically attempt to undermine certain people's tastes and approaches towards music (and there are plenty of these around). sort of deflates the whole spirit of the thing if the discussion becomes too venom charged. after all, there are enough members on here to suggest that just about every band and track known to man is a sacred cow to someone on here.

just ideas and speculation anyhow as i consistently enjoy returning here, even if i take more stock in reading than contributing

and any list i come up with obviously isn't with the intention of irritating others. it's more an attempt to guage people's impressions on particular songs/records etc, and to harness a sense of what individuals on here hold dear.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 26 October 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

I.e. "ban ILM"

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 26 October 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

Well there's a huge gap between what your intentions were for posting drivel like that and how people perceive those sorts of threads, you should keep that in mind. The point is, there are many many stupid list threads on ILM these days and a lot of people I imagine are really sick of them. Just something to think about.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 26 October 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

haha, i'd sooner think about my bills, taxes, job, mortgage, band, holiday plans, fiance...but yes, somewhere at the back of my mind i'll spare a thought for ill-conceived, stupid list threads ;)

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 26 October 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

Hang on. It takes me about six seconds to scan a list, find it mildly entertaining (or not) and move on. Is that such a big deal? Life ain't that short.

tolstoy (tolstoy), Thursday, 26 October 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

true actually, if in a certain frame of mind i can think for a solid minute about the relative merits of list type threads *sigh*
