let strangers pay for it! and use what's left for the so-called "FAPS"

you want to have a civilized conversation about this, I think you had best start off by completely covering the screen in 300 copies of the same animated gif

facts: after keef releases his build of the code, you and jw and the rest of the we-go-out-of-our-way-to-throw-tantrums-at-the-hands-that-feed-us crew can fucking go for it, and play ban-yr-buddies all day long while raking in the dough. I am pretty sure the business model of a whole bulletin board full of jpgs of animals + word art interspersed with one-liner zings and bulk text copied from other people's blogs has never been done before on the internet, and will bring the adsense dollars in such volume I can't even imagine.

Can you call it a "build" if its php?

jesus you two are fucking 12 year olds (not lfam, obviously)
I also support this notion; it's not that hard to ad block if you are really against it and it'd be a good way to pay for maintenance from this point forward.

-- Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyza...), Today. (allyzay) (link)

but as was informed on the ILX thread about same topic this has "already been discussed months ago" whatever that means.
-- Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyza...), Today. (allyzay) (link)

It means it was discussed months ago. The problem has never really been the money, it's been getting people to do stuff.
-- ailsa (ailsa.watso...), Today. (ailsa) (link)

Why not even make an option to turn off ad display in preferences (another incentive to login!)

months ago we weren't in such a pickle with hosting, so I don't understand that either.
I would like to see this brought up again w/ Norman et al. but this thread is just going to turn into a shitfestival as soon as a UK poster disagrees with an all noise dude
-- FACTS: I'M A WAITER (tombo...), Today. (TOMBOT) (link)

or... it will turn into people making meta-predictions.

PRO

1. revenue flow will match bandwidth usage
2. no annoying, contentious begging campaigns

the way this works now is if you don't like the idea you say why instead of making pre-emptive personal attacks like this one

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

Yes.

The two easiest options I saw when all of this came up were to either limit limit traffic to logged-in users only (with an in for GoogleBot so we can still use it to search) or support everything with an ad program.

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

this is not an issue for moderators to deal with.

banrique (blueski), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

you could even set it up so that the adsense money went into an account that our host could automatically deduct the monthly payment from, meaning nobody would have to "do stuff"

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

which is why it's not on the mod discussion board

"do stuff" = all the programming and techie shite that Keith and others are doing just now.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

Hosting is going to be in exchange for logo placement, not cash.

Django Blowhardt (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

Is there that great a need for cash? We only need it just now because ilx doesn't own a server, and that's a one-off cost.

It would be good to have money for:
a) Say a year's colo (hosting) charges, in case PTW pull funding
b) a backup server.

though, so what about turning on ads until we've raised that amount of cash, then turning them off again?

stet (stet), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

I just asked that elsewhere (about the need for a steady income)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

(and I thought you would know the answer, rather than being another one doing the asking!)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

Yeh, I'm just framing it all conciliation-like. We don't *need* the money, but it would be *good* to have it for things mentioned.

stet (stet), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

Well, perhaps the hitsjesus gang can put together some numbers, ballpark for bandwidth and solid figures for the server purchase, and perhaps I can build a nice little spreadsheet to see what kind of lifecycle support fund we need. We could run ads until we have an appropriate sum, put it in a money market and leave it well enough alone, in trust to Norman or Ned or whomever we decide we can't imagine running off with it. When everything goes tits up again in a couple of years we can at least avoid the beggar act, and then put ads back up to replenish.

Alternatively, we would just use ads constantly, and if there was enough income that we didn't need it to support the site, we would donate it to a charity that we could all agree to.

Neither of these is possible unless we can agree on a custodian for the money and a charity to donate to. It's not that there's nobody willing to do it.

FACTS: I'M A WAITER (TOMBOT), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

I'm quite happy for Stet to remain in charge of money things. Though I guess that's up to him.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

I like the idea of ads. Future server/hosting needs, and charity.

Django Blowhardt (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 2 November 2006 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

I wouldn't go into it without being absolutely sure that the community won't self-destruct the first time we see a number with a $ in front.

It's well and good that people who are donating trust Stet. But what about all the people who aren't donating and feel really strongly against the idea of donating at all? Do they trust Stet with the ad money? What about if we find out the ad money is around four figures a month or higher?

$$$ is always dirty. Especially when it comes easy. I'm just voicing worst-case scenarios, I'm not against the idea myself.

FACTS: I'M A WAITER (TOMBOT), Thursday, 2 November 2006 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

$$$ is always dirty OTM. I really don't think we should do it beyond getting cash for a rainy day and a backup server.

I don't really want aynthing to do with long-term cash flow, either, I'm hopeless with organising etc, and I'd accidentally spend it on buckfast or something

stet (stet), Thursday, 2 November 2006 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, dealing with the money is something I mentioned on the corresponding ILE thread, about the clique accusations and circle-jerkery that is bound to ensue. If the money is large amounts, there isn't one single person here that everyone is going to agree on that we can all trust.

Which is shit, but it's life.

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 2 November 2006 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

Okay Tom, I don't think linking a poster for a movie where you bear a striking physical similarity to the dude who goes all gonzonutbarlooney on everyone around him is going to make people trust you!

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 November 2006 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

Can we keep this all on the ILE thread if possible, just to herd all the discussion into one place? ILE is read by more people and this isn't really an issue for the mods.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 2 November 2006 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

2. no annoying, contentious begging campaigns

I don't understand how one thread every now and then asking people to donate is annoying. You can either contribute to the fund or ignore it. Where's the downside?

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 3 November 2006 07:40 (eighteen years ago)

If it means Keith Allen dying again I'm all for it.
