you need to play with some setting somewhere to get newanswersrss.xml etc to execute as PHP.

according to http://corz.org/serv/tricks/htaccess.php a good way to do this is

<FilesMatch "\.xml$">
SetHandler application/x-httpd-php
</FilesMatch>

though you may want to tie down that regexp a bit tighter

Stet, can you turn them on and then construct feedburner versions of them, make ilx export links to the feedburner ones and then filter the ilx ones so only feedburner can hit them? :X
