Problems With LINK Title Text?

Yo, helping friendly coder dudes:

Is the LINK tag supposed to disallow any punctuation in the My Link Title section of the LINK? I got dinged w/ an illegal link error when I included an exclamation point in the title, but was fine when I reposted w/out punctuation.

Hi David,

Yeah, it traps certain punctuation stuff as a security precaution, and indeed links to certain things or that contain certain strings etc.

An exclamation mark is disallowed, but to be honest, it probably ought not be. It could be an issue in a website run off some Unix scripting language, but it won't affect Java. I could take it out when I put some other stuff in at some point.

<> ' " ` ! { } [ ]

Are precluded.

Actually, the problem you're having and a few others is that I'm checking for the dodgy characters etc. on the whole tag that's entered, and not just the http://... bit. Easy enough to sort, but would need to reboot the server to change. I want to bundle up changes and do new deployments at known times, as it will involve a minute of so's downtime of the box to pick up changes. Plus changes need tested etc. etc.

three weeks pass...
Hi, Don Allred here. Could you please tell me why the following was illegal, was it the ?, which seems necessary: [[Removed Illegal Link]]

Hi Don,

? is not illegal in a link. Nor is &, as they're quite legit. What was the actual link you tried to post (just don't stick it in link tags) and I'll have a look to see if it's being disallowed for another reason.

the link I tried to post is is http://www.paperthinwalls.com/singlefile/item?id=388

Keith, Sunday, 18 March 2007 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

Looks fine to me...

I put in:

[link]http://www.paperthinwalls.com/singlefile/item?id=388[/link]

[link Test Link]http://www.paperthinwalls.com/singlefile/item?id=388[/link]

Keith, Sunday, 18 March 2007 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Ah - just looking at logs and your problem was that you posted an extra ']' at the start.

[link Whatever]]http://www.paperthinwalls.com/singlefile/item?id=388[/link]

SO SICK OF ALL THE PRODUCT PLACEMENT

Are you referring to my link? The guy asked for info, so I linked my review (I would have linked it even if somebody else had written it). my test http://www.paperthinwalls.com/singlefile/item/id=388

dow, Monday, 19 March 2007 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

duuuh, now I get it! I was putting Paper Thin Walls as My Link Title in the first set of brackets (that's what's misleading about the instructions; makes it seem like you always have to put that in there, instead of just the word link. Other than specifying a test link, when do you have to put anything specific in the first set of brackets? ) Anyway, thanks for showing me the right way.

I never bothered documenting the fact that you can go:
[link]http://etc...[/link]
So hardly your fault there! But it's basically because the new one just auto highlights links, so it becomes a bit redundant.

Can you guys add that (the [link]http://blahblah.gov[/ link] to the formatting help thing at the bottom of each thread, that might save everyone some heartache (although I'm guessing maybe it will be in new version?)?

nickalicious, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

Is in new version. Along with automatic linking of plain urls

Which pretty much renders the thing I didn't document obsolescent, so I'll probably just remove it, in the interests of keeping things simple.
