Are you seriously going to lock the marissa thread without even starting a thread about it here?

Its bad enough we dont have admin log.

I'm starting to think I should have listened more to jon's whining.

g®▲Ðұ, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't start a thread mostly because I knew there'd be one here in no time. Until we moved over to the new boards, Marissa was banned, and all Marissa threads were being deleted on sight (Jess started this, I think). It's not a radical change in direction.

Put it this way, she's either an attention seeking troll or she's mentally ill. If it's the latter, then ILX really isn't the place for her and threads containing several hundred posts mocking or encouraging her isn't particularly edifying for anyone concerned. Sorry if this ruins anybody's fun.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

It ruins everybody's fun.

Pye Poudre, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

How hard would it be to move the thread to the idiot thread repository and keep it unlocked?

g®▲Ðұ, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

I think there's a point here that you missed.

this is not true!

JW, Thursday, 22 March 2007 06:06 (nineteen years ago)

marissa's posts are beautiful in a strange way. I think I love her.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 22 March 2007 06:13 (nineteen years ago)

so what are you so afraid of?

latebloomer, Thursday, 22 March 2007 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

Locking Marissa threads is a kneejerk reaction from the days when she used to start a new thread for each comment she wanted to make rather than keeping them all in one place, I think.

I'm just surprised she still interests people.

blueski, Thursday, 22 March 2007 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

You're surprised by anything childish, cruel or silly having fans on IL*?

kv_nol, Thursday, 22 March 2007 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

i understand why there would be a need for this policy in the past, but she was keeping it all to one thread this time. not only that but it went on for almost a week before anyone bothered to lock it, for what was no good reason.

A NEW ILX NEEDS NEW MARISSA POLICIES.

g®▲Ðұ, Thursday, 22 March 2007 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

I agree that thread was a trainwreck/time bomb, but I actually cheered at her participation here

StanM, Thursday, 22 March 2007 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sort of surprised people were so bothered by the locking of the thread. I was under the impression it was only a small handful of Marissa-baiters (generally the usual troll-enablers like Grout and Forks and so forth) who were bothering with it and it had become a string of Marissa posts. I didn't lock it initially because I thought it might peter out by itself but it looked like it wasn't going to and had 'mentalist timebomb' written all over it.

I'm not going to kneejerk delete the latest thread because it's a (reasonably) sane and sensible question but if she starts using ILM as her blog again then I will, if people broadly agree its getting too much.

Matt DC, Friday, 23 March 2007 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

There seems to be a school of thought that "marissa" is an impostor. Do your admin superpowers allow you to confirm or debunk this?

M.V., Friday, 23 March 2007 22:30 (nineteen years ago)

1) I am not baiting anybody! I was just interested in if she was actually doing some new music, and wether we'd get to hear any of it.
2) I'm certain it's not an imposter.

The rest, I'll leave in yr capable hands.

Matt DC, Sunday, 25 March 2007 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

I can't tell the difference - how can they both have the same username?

StanM, Sunday, 25 March 2007 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

jergincito, Sunday, 25 March 2007 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

Obviously, Marissa is being done wrong.

Mark G, Monday, 26 March 2007 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

If anyone wants to link to the "gone off the net" thread and one of her most recent excursions, I'll look at the ips, she usually comes in from the same one.

Pashmina, Monday, 26 March 2007 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

StanM, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:05 (nineteen years ago)

It appears to be the same person. At the very least, all of the recent posts on the new code are from the same ip.

Pashmina, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

I was wondering if it was a fake Marissa that registered the username when we moved over to the new code.

Matt DC, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

she just posted her phone number Matt, call her and see.

HI DERE.

caek, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe I'm being naive in giving her the benefit of the doubt, but we were almost getting somewhere in persuading Marissa to stop posting so much random shit and actually contribute to a discussion of music. Of course the site would be better without her bleeding heart blog entries, but shouldn't we try to convince her of this rather than just wipe her out? Just my tuppence as a longtime lurker.

tom, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

I am convinced that Marissa is really Tori Amos.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, cut her a *little* slack.

(I know, I know)

Mark G, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like to keep her random thought/rambling posts in one thread if possible. Historically, she has had a habit of starting a new thread every time a thought crosses her mind and I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Pashmina, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 23:43 (nineteen years ago)

That's fair.

Mark G, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

Just in case anyone asks - I was deleting her rambling blog-type threads about herself/Joachim/whatever, of which there were about seven yesterday. It wasn't me who deleted the Kornog thread, I was happy to keep that and the other music thread there, in the hope she'd get the message. If she keeps things to one thread for now then fine. I'm going to continue deleting any further Joachim threads though.

Still, one of the good things about the new boards is that nothing is permanently deleted so the Kornog thread's back now.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 08:10 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, cut her a *little* slack.

Oh, I'm also not a "Marissa Baiter" OR a "troll enabler"

She's totally back up to speed now. Fake or not, she needs removing.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 08:13 (nineteen years ago)

Does anyone actually think M's a troll?

Mark G, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

No, trolling is intentional.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 29 March 2007 03:06 (nineteen years ago)

Ok, as a sometime Marissa-enabler I say it's time to ban her. I've tried to not "bait" and I've tried to be perfectly nice and friendly and engage her in normal conversations about music and lightly suggest that she might need help. Dumb of me, I know. But I'd really rather not have someone I've never met calling me a woman abuser all over ILX and claiming I'm concealing my identity, even if everyone knows she's crazy.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 29 March 2007 04:31 (nineteen years ago)

Holy sh*t, that link Curt1s posted...

And then this:

*head assplodes*

StanM, Thursday, 29 March 2007 06:32 (nineteen years ago)

However, right now she's more settled than she ever has been.

Hurting2, she'll calm down given time. Banning her because she over-reacted to yr 'joek' seems unfair.

Mark G, Thursday, 29 March 2007 08:38 (nineteen years ago)

What evidence do you have that she'll calm down given time? As opposed to, say, staying like this or getting worse and worse?

The only reason Marissa isn't banned by now is because banning her has the amusing unfortunate side-effect of banning half the board. Hopefully that should change shortly.

If people are that keen to carry on playing with Marissa, maybe they could do it on one of the 50 other message boards she does exactly the same thing on?

Matt DC, Thursday, 29 March 2007 09:10 (nineteen years ago)

The only reason Marissa isn't banned by now is because banning her has the amusing unfortunate side-effect of banning half the board.

Is that because she is some sort of emanation of our collective psyche?

I thought we were all Joachim.

Srsly though, I don't think I'm going to talk to her anymore about anything. I've given up on that idea.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 29 March 2007 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

But where were you the last time(s?) around?

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 29 March 2007 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

I guess if you hadn't tried before, you wouldn't have learned.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 29 March 2007 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

I feel sorry for her, but come on, this isn't normal

http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=41&threadid=56923

StanM, Thursday, 29 March 2007 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

was the 'I am not very beautiful' thread _deleted_?

there really should be room for something like that somewhere on this board. move it to 'I Rate' or 'Idiot' or somewhere if you have to, I can see why someone would consider it disruptive, but deleteing it was flat out cowardly -- people should be able to handle their own discomfort whenever something happens that isn't 'normal'. Who did it, by the way?

I understand we're walking a fine line with her and that these threads are arguably gratuitous self-therapy, but I think they're also clearly much more than that, so I think an exception needs to be made in her case. move or lock threads, but deleting is a mistake.

Milton Parker, Thursday, 29 March 2007 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

people should be able to handle their own discomfort whenever something happens that isn't 'normal'.

My discomfort is mainly with the way people bait and torment her. (I'm not, incidentally, suggesting that everyone who tries to talk to her is baiting her.)

Pashmina already said he didn't want the free floating blog-like posts multiplying. It could have been moved and locked instead, true.

I don't know Bela Fleck and I surely don't like the bango as a instrument.

g®▲Ðұ, Thursday, 29 March 2007 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

I was the one who deleted it. Locking it and/or moving it would have made no difference whatsoever to her behaviour. It seems fairly clear that Marissa doesn't look at any boards other than ILM so moving it would have exactly the same effect. Also it could actually encourage her to stray onto other boards which should really be avoided it at all possible.

Also, she does the same thing on several other boards all over the internet, a cursory Google search reveals that. Not being able to post to ILM isn't going to make the blindest bit of difference to her. Having ILMers deliberately playing with her and winding her up might well do.

FWIW, nothing that's deleted under the new code ACTUALLY gets deleted, it just gets hidden. Anything can be bought back at any time.

Matt DC, Thursday, 29 March 2007 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

Mental illness is actually pretty normal. (And I'm guessing not helped by posting to ILM.)

She's like just this side of a Daniel Johnston duets album.

nabisco, Thursday, 29 March 2007 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

After she commits suicide/murder people are going to read these threads for a laugh.

jim, Friday, 30 March 2007 01:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm glad she stopped ranting about how I'm a sick, fucked up, abusive person. That really wasn't pleasant. I think the best approach is just to completely ignore her.

Hurting 2, Friday, 30 March 2007 02:57 (nineteen years ago)

yes we know you've posted that like a bjillion times sheesh.

chaki, Friday, 30 March 2007 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

Hurting 2, Friday, 30 March 2007 04:23 (nineteen years ago)

marissa needs a blog

deej, Friday, 30 March 2007 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure she understands the difference between this and a blog. I mean, the concept of Google finding your name after you post it all over the internet freaks her out...

marmotwolof, Friday, 30 March 2007 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Can I be banned from Marissa's threads? I have somehow allowed myself to get drawn in. Oh well, it's at a pretty harmless level.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 31 March 2007 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

I'm guessing she's bipolar.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 31 March 2007 00:36 (nineteen years ago)

I'm having second thoughts about whether or not this is even real marissa.

marmotwolof, Sunday, 1 April 2007 01:32 (nineteen years ago)

I've banned her. The ban *should* work okay under the new code but if other people are having problems posting just shout.

I'm guessing she's bipolar.

yeah. that's what i've figured for a while, too.
