Blank screen after posting?

I asked about this on the Tech Thread, but maybe this is a better place. Whenever I post something, I get a blank screen, and then I have to click refresh to get see ILX again. I wonder what's causing this?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

It doesn't happen when I post a question, but it does with every answer. I'm using IE.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 11:55 (eighteen years ago)

you forgot caps lock again silly

600, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah this has been reported as a problem on IE5 or 6 I think. I know I gave up and eventually downloaded Firefox at work, and it works fine.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

Anything that gets people off of IE can't be all bad.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

Well, yeah, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed download Firefox on my work computer... Is there nothing that can be done about this?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

Hi Tuomas, I can't actually reproduce the problem on IE or anywhere else. Until I can, there's not a lot I can do about it.

Someone mentioned something about deleting cookies and that helping... You could try that...

If you do, can you let me know if it works? Thanks.

Keith, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, let's try.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

Nope. I deleted cookies and cleared the cache, but it didn't help. I think it has to do with this version of IE, since we have a newer version at school, and I've had no problems with that.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

OK, which version? This is going to make it tricky, as you can't install older versions of IE.

Keith, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

Version 6.0, it seems.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks... I dunno what I can do easily... Maybe something with VMWare, but I'll see what I can do. Either way, it will be the next release if anything can happen about it.

Thanks...

Quitting IE is like quitting smoking, but about 1000x easier. There's just no downside to it.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

It's IE6, I have this problem on my cranky old laptop that is so shite and ready for dumping that I can't even be arsed downloading Firefox or IE7 onto it.

Keith, was it not you I had this discussion with somewhere late one night? It might have been stet, it might have been both of you, but I'm fucked if I can remember where it was.

ailsa, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

I've had this problem with Firefox. It's part of the problems that you get when you try posting to ILX from different computers.

jeff, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know what happened, but I don't get the blank screen anymore here at my work computer. Did someone fix the problem?

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 April 2007 06:26 (eighteen years ago)

No...If you do remember what happened, can you post. It's clearly some browser oddity.

Keith, Thursday, 5 April 2007 10:05 (eighteen years ago)

happens for me to with ie 6.0. just hit refresh.

jergïns, Thursday, 5 April 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

(and i'm in helsinki so that could be why)

jergïns, Thursday, 5 April 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

I do do stuff that's location-specific, e.g. showing dates and so on are based on locale, but I'd hope this has nothing to do with this problem! Can you try deleting your cookies and restarting IE too, Jergïns...

Keith, Thursday, 5 April 2007 13:28 (eighteen years ago)

Weirdly, I've just got a new machine at work, which also runs IE6, and it's absolutely fine with posting here. Odd.

Matt DC, Thursday, 5 April 2007 13:39 (eighteen years ago)

wait, are you saying tuomas is having a problem with stuff that others dont?

weird!

600, Friday, 6 April 2007 10:57 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

Hey this just happened to me. I'm using IE.

nickalicious, Friday, 18 May 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

It just happened again when I posted that.

nickalicious, Friday, 18 May 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's cookies, despite what's said above, as we see this most after a code update. Try deleting them and restarting IE.

stet, Friday, 18 May 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

it's happening to me too (on IE). I'll try that, although refreshing the page works fine also.

sleeve, Saturday, 19 May 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, same situation here, but it doesn't bother me...Refresh is a simple button.

Tape Store, Sunday, 20 May 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

Happening all the time to me (IE). Gonna have to try this cookie thing, but goddamn, it'll lose all my logins on other sites. :-(

Masonic Boom, Monday, 21 May 2007 09:28 (eighteen years ago)

Nope, clearing cookies thing didn't work. :-(

Masonic Boom, Monday, 21 May 2007 09:28 (eighteen years ago)

The cookies thing doesn't work for me either. Also this is now a problem on my work browser when it wasn't under the last code.

Matt DC, Monday, 21 May 2007 09:31 (eighteen years ago)

IE6, by the way.

Matt DC, Monday, 21 May 2007 09:32 (eighteen years ago)

It's still doing it on my laptop too (also IE6)

ailsa, Monday, 21 May 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

IE6!

Tape Store, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

yep happens to my IE6 at work too

Ste, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

it's broke 4 me @ work too

g-kit, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 10:21 (eighteen years ago)

Can you try logging into the sandbox and seeing if you get the same results? I don't have IE6 to test with.

Keith, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

Keith, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

I forgot that I put something in that might have solved this problem. Bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut, and I don't have IE6 to test it, nor do I understand why the problem actually happens (IE6 bug probably), but let me know how you get on.

Cheers.

Keith, Friday, 25 May 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

Can someone confirm or deny that this has sorted the problem? Cheers.

Keith, Sunday, 27 May 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

still happens

chaki, Monday, 28 May 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

Has anyone asked Tuomas if his monitor is on?

John Justen, Monday, 28 May 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

I'm really upset about losing all the insights from everyone who posted here :( Please fix this ASAP!!!!
