That's not the regex so much as javascript escaping a semi-escaped string. There should likely be an unescape before the escape.

FWIW, if you have a dollar sign between BBCode tags -- even if it's just italics -- the post fails (you get "An error has occurred; please try again shortly").

You probably know this already, though.
