félix pié, Friday, 20 April 2007 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

Mr. Que, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

hey here's a good one:

LETS HAVE A POLL ON WAHT TO DO11111!111111

That one guy that quit, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

Should we have a poll on what to do? Y/N

StanM, Friday, 20 April 2007 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

put them in a separate I love Polls board

OTFM! Save me reading all those shitty threads I can't vote in.

onimo, Friday, 20 April 2007 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

I've toned down the red a bit.

stet, Friday, 20 April 2007 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

why can't you just move the polls to a separate board?

Mr. Que, Friday, 20 April 2007 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

or at least delete this guy

http://ilx.wh3rd.net/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=41&threadid=57312#unread

Mr. Que, Friday, 20 April 2007 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

Frogman Henry, Friday, 20 April 2007 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

just get rid of polls period

creme1, Friday, 20 April 2007 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

Keep polls.
Just get a killfile for all those who want to ignore them and that way everyone is happy, if that's possible to write of course.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 20 April 2007 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

Now I can't find all my favourite poll threads :(

all poll threads are duplicates of old threads amirite

Poll: Best ______ Album = POO: ________ /POX: _______/etc.

am0n, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

Oh FFS

If they're going to be there, they might as well be labelled. Like houses infected with the Black Death.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 21 April 2007 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

I POLL EVERYTHING

jergïns, Saturday, 21 April 2007 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

If they're going to be there, they might as well be labelled. Like houses infected with the Black Death.

otfm, if a bit strong :)

onimo, Saturday, 21 April 2007 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

I disagree - it should be screamingly obvious that 'Best Cure B-Side' or whatever is a poll (or an equally dull thread if nothing else). Having 'POLL' in big letters right across the New Answers page is just annoying, and probably encourages people to start more of the bloody things.

Matt DC, Saturday, 21 April 2007 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

and probably encourages people to start more of the bloody things.

Wouldn't they just write POLL at the start of their thread!

Keith, Saturday, 21 April 2007 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

Incidentally, they can be turned off easily. Well, can prevent people starting new ones easily. I did make it configurable.

All you have to do now is get agreement from everyone on ILX that this is what you want to do. That should be easy.

Keith, Saturday, 21 April 2007 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

We had "best X" threads before the Dawn of Polls you know.

onimo, Saturday, 21 April 2007 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

I only took the whole tag off as a temporary thing because it made New Answers unusable. I'd suggest the title just looked like
Best Funkadelic Studio Album [Poll by Shakey Mo Collier, ends mmm dd, yyyy] 38 new answers

stet, Saturday, 21 April 2007 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

YYYY-MM-DD, for international use.

Keith, Saturday, 21 April 2007 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

Stet's solution seems good. I'd prefer them to say "Bring Out Your Dead" tho.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 21 April 2007 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

YYYY-MM-DD, for international use.
What country uses that? I thought mmm dd was pretty universal, and gets round the dd/mm vs mm/dd UK/US thing, no?

stet, Saturday, 21 April 2007 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

Oh I see, you man Jan 16 or something. YYYY-MM-DD is ISO, and no-one uses it!

Keith, Saturday, 21 April 2007 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

i prefer DDD-M-YYYYYY

Lingbert, Saturday, 21 April 2007 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

Haha

Keith, Saturday, 21 April 2007 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

Suggestion:

A small red "p" for current polls.

And a small black "p" for finished ones.

And a return for the closing date.

I thangyew

Mark G, Monday, 23 April 2007 01:58 (nineteen years ago)

srsly!

If you hate polls, you can avoid them!

Mark G, Monday, 23 April 2007 08:42 (nineteen years ago)

It was virtually impossible to avoid them on Friday without avoiding ILM altogether.

Matt DC, Monday, 23 April 2007 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

it was virtually impossible to not click on them? you can blame 'Amazing Randy' for bumping them all on fri.

blueski, Monday, 23 April 2007 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

i love that the only way poll-haters could really get their way here is to do a poll in the hope that enough people would vote yes to removing them.

blueski, Monday, 23 April 2007 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

As long as it doesn't say POLL in red letters I'm fairly happy. The less cluttered the New Answers page looks the better IMO.

Matt DC, Monday, 23 April 2007 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

yyyy-mm-dd is good because if you list the dates their alphanumerical order matches their chronological order

lfam, Monday, 23 April 2007 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

Stet's suggestion is good

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Monday, 23 April 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

I've done it, on the test site.

Keith, Monday, 23 April 2007 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

Does the test site version also list poll end dates and change to "poll results" afterwards? If not, it should.

onimo, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

The closing time of the poll should be included in the initial post rather than only in the thread title you see on the board. If a poll has dropped off New Answers, you can search for it but you can't see the closing time unless you revive the thread. And now that the red text is gone (which is nice, thanks), you can't see the closing time at all.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

There are a variety of things I think should happen with this, over and above this:

- Maybe we shouldn't let people make polls for too long in advance
- Either way, I should write a scheduled process that bumps polls that are due, the day before they are due
- Also, another scheduled process should bump polls when the results are in

The red text is gone only as a short term measure. I don't care what colour it is, but the test site shows it at the end of the thread title, not at the start. You guys can argue about what colour you want it to be. It's green on my stylesheet. I suspect it would make sense to have the results coloured differently to open polls.

Omino, it looks like it does here. I need to put an extra space in between the thread title and the poll results text, though.

All in good time, though.

Keith, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

Tuomas, yes I agree.

Keith, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

Omino, it looks like it does here.

here = blank page

onimo, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah... You're too late... I restored the sandbox database where that link was pointing earlier this evening. Make a new poll on it!

Keith, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

Keith, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

"Restored" makes it sound easier than it was.

Keith, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

Well I would but I can't register as it isn't sending me a password.

onimo, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

latebloomer, Thursday, 26 April 2007 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

Thing is I know it is morally right to take the 'OMG STOP THE MADNESS!' stance (the Sleeper poll I meant wtf?) but then I see a poll about an artist I like and get drawn into the discussion. Then I feel all dirty.

Matt DC, Thursday, 26 April 2007 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

Can we have a button for list threads too?

StanM, Thursday, 26 April 2007 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

Abortions for some, miniature American flags for others.

PappaWheelie V, Friday, 27 April 2007 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

Can we reinstate 'one thread per user per day' on ILM please, for polls at least? I'm sure these people desperate to poll every magazine end of year list ever can wait a bit longer for them.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

Yes please Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy is out of control!!!!

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

just under a 1/3rd of the threads on the new answers page of ilm are poll threads, fyi.

félix pié, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

but how can you enforce 'one poll per day per user'?

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

Automatic deletion of poll threads!

Or alternatively ask Pfunkboy and Geir nicely to tone it down.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

(I am aware this is possibly very naive, in Geir's case certainly)

Matt DC, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

what would the big deal be to make a new section called I Poll Music?????????

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

OK I support auto deletion of poll threads by mods if someone breaks da rools

xpost because it wouldn't be fair on me and my tireless 'make an I List Music board' campaign. also we'd need two Poll boards, one for Geir and the Brig and one for everyone else.

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

Speaking as an occasional poll poster, I suggest one poll per user running at any given time.

It would stop multiple poll spamming and it would encourage people to use shorter voting times so you don't get polls hanging around long after discussion has cooled off, and then being bumped back when the answers appear. There's no question so important that it can't be sorted out in a day.

Groke, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

Speaking as an occasional poll poster,

it's the new 'speaking as a parent'! or in this case 'old'.

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

There are a couple of simple things I could do, when I am recovered from food poisoning, like prevent you making a poll last more than a few days. Also automatically bumping them prior to, and when the results appear, maybe.

Beyond this, who starts what, and when, is better dealt with by moderators, as I suspect it's a short-term problem.

Keith, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

Of course, I could turn them off completely.

Keith, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

ILM needs burping.

blueski, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

Of course, I could turn them off completely.

-- Keith, Tuesday, May 8, 2007 6:52 PM (3 hours ago)

who duz this sound like?

sanskrit, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 02:18 (nineteen years ago)

actually i wish that guy would come back and fix everything

sanskrit, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 02:18 (nineteen years ago)

Is there any way we could have a feature that makes it impossible to have more than one poll per user running at a time? Tom's suggestion upthread is a very good one.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 08:16 (nineteen years ago)

As a multiple poll-starting offender, I wholeheartedly agree with that.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 08:29 (nineteen years ago)

what would the big deal be to make a new section called I Poll Music?

we have to call it I Poll Everything

jergïns, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 09:56 (nineteen years ago)

Polls aren't a problem on ILE tho.
