i am tempted to paypal you guys some money if it means i can use the old search engine, where you could search for posts by an individual user and for words actually in threads and shit. anyway, get to work on this dudes

He's spot on about this. There's no way we can support the sort of search we used to have. The server's dealing with millions of hits a day, and running a few big queries sends performance into the toilet.

The search has got a bit better in the code to come: it now lets you search for 3-letter terms, and there's an archive page that should massively increase what Google sees, but ultimately the problem is not with code, it's with resources. Lots of search code was written, including for by-user and specific-date queries, but it had to be turned off because it hammered performance even just in testing.

Big DB + 1 server + millions of hits = something's got to give.

Here's a thing you might want to look at.

I was searching for a thread on David Cameron recently and I used "search thread titles for Cameron" and got about 100 hits, approximately 6 of which had Cameron in the title. Looking at the false positive returns it seems that these threads are being returned because thread starter has "Cameron" in their username.

Of course you might not want to fix it as it gives us a handy byproduct in that we can search on threads started by a particular user, such as those rare Grandpont Genie threads or the hard to spot Geir and Brigadier L-P polls.

you're an idiot. even on the rare occasions you do manage to say something useful you can't do it without obnoxious insults. a lot of people take it from you, get upset and then just deal with it/forgive because they know you're going to be right here the next day saying the same shit to whoever because it looks like you have this AS thing that people are always talking about probably worse than anyone else on ILX. it's pathetic tho. get a fucking grip. try showing your working once or explaining the reasons behind your abuse. ILX was rotten BEFORE the rewrite. using the Search engine at certain times of the day did cause ILX to become unaccessible due to the demands of the process - because it wasn't written to deal with that demand is my understanding. now this may not be the most accurate way to describe the situation but i don't really give a shit if it isn't. unlike you i don't spend 24 hours a day crying because ILX doesn't work like i want it to, bitter because you're unable to remake it yourself and retain the popularity of the board.

change your fucking attitude or we can carry on like this if you insist. you deserve contempt because you spread it around for no good reason or with no good argument. anything useful you do contribute to ILX (hard to see from here) is undermined by this spoilt childish behaviour. imbecile.
