ILE Bannings

It's kinda obvious why but some clarity would be nice.

They are temporary bans for reviving multiple threads at once, making the board less usable. Both posters will be able to post again next week.

Charlie, Friday, 13 July 2007 11:50 (eighteen years ago)

Why doesn't a similar policy apply to starting 30 or 40 poll threads a day, as happened a fortnight back?

597, Friday, 13 July 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

Also why only ban two of the three people "reviving multiple threads at once", and why not post a comment indicating that they had been banned?

Fourthly, surely all posters who are posting to said revived threads, repeatedly bumping them to the top of new answers, are also culpable?

At the time of banning, the top 15 ILE threads were revived Dog Latin threads - they've since sunk down the page. It was hardly fair on anyone else using the board.

Also why only ban two of the three people "reviving multiple threads at once"

Only two of the three people were noticed.

Charlie, Friday, 13 July 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

Why doesn't a similar policy apply to starting 30 or 40 poll threads a day, as happened a fortnight back?

because that was done by sassy americans who ride wild at the gates of dawn and take no prisoners

also starting loads of vaguely amusing polls is still better than reviving a load of threads started by the same person just so you can take the piss out of that person who isn't even around to 'defend' themselves

blueski, Friday, 13 July 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

Although I'm not Charlie, it was me who banned both posters - I'm saying so because Pash is offline right now for a good reason and it's REALLY not a good time to be calling him out or hassling him offboard, which could well happen. To be honest I probably wouldn't have banned either of you (I'm barely looking at ILX right now, I might not even have noticed) if I hadn't received three emails in pretty quick succession going "can you make them stop? It's really fucking annoying". None of which were from Doglatin incidentally.

I think the annoyance was less about going after a regular poster and more about swamping the board with dozens of thread due to a (not particularly funny) joke. And bearing in mind there are probably hundreds of Doglatin threads I had no idea when it was going to stop.

I'm happy to unban you all as long as you promise to cut this out. It's hugely annoying for 99% of ILE posters to have to wade through endless threads of three people dicking about. Any one poster or small group of posters starting dozens of poll threads would have the same treatment, although they might be asked nicely to stop first due to being a bit less mean-spirited.

597, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

Matt explained why he banned Dom upthread

Matt's explanation came an hour or so after a complaint was made ABOUT the ban - too leisurely?

maybe one could understand why it happened considering the context behind it all (dom's track record plus actual complaints) - of course not everyone would agree but there are many people who would post maracas.jpg at the decision, were such behaviour not considered mean-spirited and inappropriate in itself. i don't know if this number of people is more or less than number of people either against the ban in principle or number of people against it because they like DoOm for whatever reason (might be interesting to see if a similar response would occur from a ban of Louis, called for many times by Dom, jokingly - i think, and others not so jokingly)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Dom Passantino, whoever he is, would have been sitewide banned by Stet, Keith, teeny, or Pashmina, yes? And as Pashmina is away, it must have been one of the earlier three.

oops wrong thread

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

Enrique you're being a bit disinguenous here - it's the cumulative effect we're talking about. I don't know Stet's exact motivation, but I'm assuming the thread bumpings and the ILM thread were the straw that broke the camel's back, like when I finally snapped with Mickey and banned him after his behaviour on the Virginia shootings thread.

Taking the piss out of another poster's disability is cuntishness of the highest order. I mean, short of spreading viruses or outright racist or homophobic abuse or trolling, I can't think of many things that should justify a sitewide ban. After he was banned, he then proceeded to revive, with others, a shitload of threads purely to have a pop at another poster (who last time I looked was still posting, under a different name). Presumably he thought he could get away with it because he's a long standing prolific poster. Maybe it's good that one has finally been banned, so people know there is a line you can eventually cross no matter how long or how much you've been posting.

Actually, the fact that he's so prolific makes it worse. The Dom of a year or so ago wasn't anywhere near as bad. Now his decent contributions (and they do exist) are buried under hundreds of posts of snark, mean-spiritedness and bitching every month. He actually enjoys it, the man even has a blog full of posts celebrating the times he's pissed people off.

Also, when he did get banned, he didn't go "alright, I fucked up, I'm sorry", he went and got even more confrontational. Presumably the side admins who spend hours of their time working on keeping this site running didn't take kindly to all the "lol incompetant" stuff. I notice Dom wasn't calling the mods incompetant when they promptly, quietly and with no questions asked deleted posts slandering him all over the boards. He then started a thread about the person slandering him.

Yes, the "if being a dick was a bannable offence why not ban x or y" is a valid argument, but no one is as unpleasant this routinely (except possibly Marcello in the old days and there were mitigating circumstances there). Why should anyone give Dom the benefit of the doubt? There comes a point when "it's just for lolz" isn't really a valid defence.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

When did Passantino make fun of another poster's disability?

597, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

And remember that you yourself implied Passantino was a potential rapist, Matt. If you're going to talk about ILXors whose contributions over the years have degenerated into nothing but bitterness and snark...

597, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

Actually it was a potential murderer but fair cop.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

So this is a four-day ban then? Are we going to lock this thread when his four days are up or are we going to turn this into the kind of meta shitstorm that best typified old ILx?

597, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

good call on the mickey ban ref. where was the protest for that? how could what he did be argued as worse? ditto wagemann. dom was let off for that sort of behaviour countless times in the past seemingly just because he'd been around long enough and certain people liked him enough. i've accepted mod 'inconsistency' in this regard, it is unavoidable.

blueski, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

Mickey was harassing posters off-board, wasn't he? Wagemann was spamming, and to be honest was no worse than J$not or The Twisted Pollstarter when it comes to clogging up New Answers.

597, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

it's zing culture's first casualty. i thought the modreq ban was appropriate for the jsnot remark, but we have whole threads dedicated to ridiculing ilxors' photos so i don't really go along with the other stuff. i think mickey and pew were a lot worse, and they didn't even leave us the great memes that passantino generated. oh! burn!

597, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

Mickey was harassing posters off-board, wasn't he?

the FAQ has always stated that mods don't get involved in THAT. bans occur for on-board behaviour only (or should do)

Wagemann was spamming, and to be honest was no worse than J$not or The Twisted Pollstarter when it comes to clogging up New Answers.

Wagemann was banned for casual racism iirc, but it was pretty dubious and heavily influenced by the general feeling that he was just a dick anyway.

protesters just as inconsistent as moderators

Matt DC OTM, Dom crossed the line on the mod thread where Pash banned him. his response to that was basically a JW style fit except he was personally attacking other users on multiple threads across multiple boards whereas JW's redeeming quality in these moments is that he will simply ban users from noize instead of taking his adolescent fury onto ILM/ILE and trying as hard as possible to share his one-man pissing championship with the whole world.
