i never in my life thought that i would come to the defense of the esteemed Geir Hongro, but if he catches wind of this thread maybe he can explain himself. as an ILX vet, i can't imagine that geir would be dumb enough to say in a thread "I wish there were more black people that would act like white people," knowing full well that ppl would call for the banhammer.

maybe i'm wrong and geir is a racist, in which case BAN GEIR HONGRO.

Geir being a racist is certainly a shocker to me.

I'm sure Geir isn't racist, rather than that he tends to take his melody-above-everything schtick to the extreme, which tends to wind people up. That's the only comment of his I've read that could even been construed as truly racist. However, there has been a zillion times where other people have unjustifiably called him a racist because they've gotten (perhaps understandably) angry of this schtick, and he's never called people out for this. As for R.A., babbling racist ideas seemed to be his "thing", which I don't think is the case with Geir. (Unless you really think his valuing of melody above all is racist as such, which I think is a highly problematic thought.)

Out of context it's a bad comment, sure.

In context, which is more "should black people make indie music more", it's a matter of opinion either way (yes/no).

i.e. more bands like Bloc Party, yes please/no thanks...

FFS people, given that Geir sees all ILM discussion in the context of music (after all, the board name is "I Love Music"), plus his definitions of what constitutes current "black" music and current "white" music, anyone who sees this as a racist statement about black people in general and not a poorly-expressed reiteration of his musical preferences is either completely unfamiliar with him or just tediously begging AGAIN for him to be banned because they can't read anything he writes without screaming "TROLL! TROLL!" and making total asses of themselves.

(Then again I've had something like 11 years to get used to Geir so really nothing he says or does bothers me anymore.)

We basically keep Hongro around as a litmus test for noobs, was my impression

the three stages of ILM posting zen -

1. learn to ignore Geir
2. learn to ignore Dom
3. learn to ignore everyone who still pays attention to Geir or Dom
