We can't even do "Thread of missing..." anymore?

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 09:36 (seventeen years ago)

as per what/how?

Mark G, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 09:51 (seventeen years ago)

lets just all pretend nothing ever happens ever

chaki, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 10:25 (seventeen years ago)

what, like Del Amitri?

Mark G, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 10:27 (seventeen years ago)

this doesnt make sense. you just banned a regular user who ppl regularly conversed with and now its verboten to even talk about?

deej, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

It isn't verboten to talk about it, that's why this thread hasn't been locked, ditto the original teenpop thread where the ban occurred.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

wha happened?

jhøshea, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

thread of heaving a ho?

am0n, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

explain what is objectionable about
Thread of missing Gershy

deej, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

i barely talked to dude, this isnt personal, im just trying to understand why something so seemingly innocuous is off limits

deej, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

why was gershy banned?

jhøshea, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

Pretending to be sub-1000 copy bookselling music writer Frank Kogan on another site and implying that he likes the kiddies.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

Oh have a fucking guess why don't you.

To spell it out:

A/long history of rooting through ILX garbage despite both me and tom telling him to stop

B/recently-ish followed a poster around posting images of his home and workplace, as well as comments C&P-ed from that posters social networking sites in a creepy harassing manner

C/the last straw - posted libellous (IE legally actionable) spoof on ILX poster in comments on other board and then brought this trash back here.

Is that enough, do you think. If not, what do you think would be enough?

Pashmina, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

just curious jeesh

jhøshea, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

He did it a couple of weeks before the warning shot thread, which makes the permaban seem extra harsh. To the extent that somebody posting regularly on here is what passes for a "public figure" in internet bizarro-world, anybody could've posted a snark like that anywhere. It doesn't fall into the realm of snooping somebody's non-internet life, and the comment appears to be gone. So on all those grounds I'd like to seriously request a rethink?

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

and who will be in charge of thread revives now?

jhøshea, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

Plus is it really any worse than Kogan's "Everyone who posts to ILM other than me is a misogynist, homophobe, and ignoramus" schtick that he plays on other boards?

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

and who will be in charge of thread revives now?

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

but i still dont understand whats wrong with a thread of missing gershy

deej, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

its wrong to miss gershy see

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

Noodle Vague, it's libellous. This sort of shit is completely unacceptable, that's the long and short of it. Just because someone is a "public figure" by what's a pretty loose definition of the term doesn't mean everything is fair game.

The comments were only deleted because the poster emailed the site owner and requested their deletion. And considering Gershy was making cracks about the poster in question as recently as yesterday, I'd say rethinking the ban is pretty fucking unlikely.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

meta life: can't stop won't stop

am0n, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

Hadn't seen that thread, I guess in light of what's been said that comment was majorly ill-advised. Would still rather there was another way than banned for life. Still think taking the piss out of gershy after he's been kicked should be alright, as long as nobody quotes the offending material.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

NV, consider this scenario. You diss some poster for whatever reason. That poster then starts posting images of your home and your workplace after posts you've made here. No comments, just the images. No-one else knows what the images are, they're obviously just for you. Also, they root out stuff you posted to some other boards or lists or w/e, and cut&paste some of that, again without comment. What would your feelings about that be, I wonder.

This is pure poison. This is the action of a fucked-up, vindictive, sociopathic individual. I do not want this individual posting here anymore. Had I been made aware of this at the time, I would have banned this person then, no question.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

i agree it's bannable but can we get an explanation as to why "thread of missing gershy" was locked?

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

i dont think he'd object to us posting pictures of tombstones at his expense

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

it wouldn't even be that fun of a thread i just think in the context of new rules that the locking of the thread warrants an explanation as to why we can't have those anymore

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

Pash I agree with the "no cyber-stalking" rule, I understand the desire to avoid libel too. I was only aware of the thread which seems to have been the straw breaking camel's back thing, so it seemed comparatively innocuous. That was what I was querying upthread.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

lol guys im pretty sure gershy didnt make that comment

max, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

heave ho has been going around to teenpop msg boards and stuff posting as "frank kogan" and "krank fogan" for months now, he keeps IMing me to show me

max, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

o rly?

jhøshea, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

i mean maybe it was gersh, im just sayin, it seems unfair to ban the dude when his comment wasnt at all an admission of 'guilt'

max, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

This is pure poison. This is the action of a fucked-up, vindictive, sociopathic individual. I do not want this individual posting here anymore. Had I been made aware of this at the time, I would have banned this person then, no question.

-- Pashmina, Wednesday, May 28, 2008 9:43 AM (10 minutes ago) Bookmark Link

and look i get why youre banning him but gershys not fucked-up, vindictive OR sociopathic, hes just a dude with a family in LA (and you know isnt it libelous to call him those things?)

max, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

I only have this to go on, though. What the fuck else am I supposed to think about the guy after that, eh?

Pashmina, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

I mean to do that, is fucked up, vindictive and sociopathic, would you agree?

Pashmina, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

Can you libel someone we only know under a series of psuedonyms?

Matt DC, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

i dunno pash i think its pretty weak to take gabbneb's "side" of the "story"--

The poster gershy has posted on ILX pictures of my home, pictures of my workplace, and content that I posted on a social-networking site (without comment or explicit identification of these things with me), among a number of examples of arguably inappropriate behavior targeted at me over time. A minor recent example - http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?showall=true&bookmarkedmessageid=13&boardid=77&threadid=286

(all of this of course in response to my having called him nude spock for exhibiting some behavior with respect to others that to my eyes fell into one or more of the categories of conduct pashmina has now deemed prohibited or subject to mod review)

as the truth of what actually happened--gabbneb posted one example of something REALLY minor and then didnt provide evidence of any of the other stuff, and then ascribed this bizarre motive to a set of behaviors he never even demonstrated happened!!

max, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

tbh I cannot remember a single thing gershy has posted despite him posting here for like 6 years, so personally I have nothing to compare it to

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

way to gabbneb

am0n, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:07 (seventeen years ago)

I thought you were attributing my actions to some capricious attitude instead of just trying to do my job

I like Dom's pop thread he started the other day on ILM and wish he would spend more time doing that than the stuff I moved to Thread Dump
I really believe this is about improving the s/n ratio and not trying to do thought police (any more than we always have regarding bigotry and stupid trolling e.g. wagemann)

El Tomboto, Thursday, 29 May 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

I have no opinion about recent modding so this isn't a reference to that, but I hope mods don't think it's their job to improve the signal to noise ratio by editing the site in some way. That's something that has to come from all (or most) posters. Top-down editing to improve S/N is tilting at windmills and guaranteed to end up with either meltdowns or ossification.

I see mods' job as fixing the odd poll, and moving the odd thread from ILM to ILE, and making sure people don't do shit that is unseemly.

caek, Thursday, 29 May 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)

You'll be fully in support then

MMoin, Thursday, 29 May 2008 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

lol no tom obv chaki was asking for it - literally!

jhøshea, Thursday, 29 May 2008 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

and making sure people don't do shit that is unseemly.

This is obviously a subjective thing though, evidenced by the handwringing and lolz over this issue for so long now. I've personally got no probs with mods deleting inappropriate material, or banning ppl when there's just cause, but I know I'm probably in a minority.

Trayce, Thursday, 29 May 2008 23:19 (seventeen years ago)

prop joe has made the word 'unseemly' v. awesome to me

deej, Thursday, 29 May 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

Can we at least have "I can't believe it's not butthurt" back? That shit is classic material.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 30 May 2008 09:07 (seventeen years ago)

And I'd _hope_ that the mods would know when we're legitimately annoyed by modding actions, and when we're just playing devil's advocate for the good of the board.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 30 May 2008 09:08 (seventeen years ago)

and making sure people don't do shit that is unseemly.

This is obviously a subjective thing though, evidenced by the handwringing and lolz over this issue for so long now.

oh sure, but I think everyone would agree that it's very different to the specific goal of increasing the signal-to-noise, which tom mentioned.

caek, Friday, 30 May 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

no, not everyone

signal = not unseemly
noise = unseemly

El Tomboto, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

OK, i hope you are a good editor

caek, Friday, 30 May 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

it is very, very hard to tell, sometimes. explicit caveats, as tiresome as they might be, would really help.
