I am in favor of mods posting as themselves and taking credit for their actions whenever they don't feel it necessary to preserve the option of repudiation. Mods other than myself who have more of a presence on, say, flickr or facebook or myspace or blogs or etc. who have in the past experienced creepy retribution for their actions/statements probably feel differently and I can't blame them.

I don't know how long gershy posted here and I only ever knew him as gershy. As Tracer makes clear, most people who weren't sub-board (IRE/1p3/HTMLP/etc) regulars wouldn't even be able to recall any posts he made, since 99% of them were semi-random picture gags and one-liner thread revives.

Truth be told, I think it was stupid regardless of the warning but that's because I think about this little thing called consequences before I post shit, ie I try not to post/link things that are out-and-out libellous as I know that reflects on ILX in general and directly impacts people who are not me. I was an ILE mod for 3-4 years and you put up with A LOT of shit from people over stuff that isn't even as bad as the shit gershy was linking; had I seen this during my reign, gershy would have been banned without even the courtesy of Pash's explanatory post. (If I had posted something, it would have been something along the lines of "goodbye you stupid dipshit".)

Max etc, you can try and argue Gershy out of a ban on loopholes or technicalities or perceived inconsistencies all you want but the fact remains his ban was a 'straw that broke the camel's back' thing really. Gershy has posted, as far as I can see, literally nothing other than meta creepiness, bitching and disingenuous o-0 revives for well over a year now. He called this particular poster a paedo on board about a year ago, and continued to do so at regular intervals as recently as two days ago. Frankly he should have been banned the first time. And guess what, everyone else who's done similar is not exactly standing on thick ice either. Why the fuck would anyone want to give this guy the benefit of the doubt over posters whose only real ILX crimes are being a bit self-important and liking dodgy music (hey guess what that could be 98% of us).

One of the great things about the 'one week's grace' thing was that it perfectly illustrated which posters were willing or capable to modify their behaviour without the explicit threat of a ban hanging over them (ie almost everyone) and who wasn't (ie about three people including Gershy). I don't have the slightest bit of faith that he was going to change, or that unbanning him would change anything, because he's already ignored at least one pretty big 'DON'T DO THIS SHIT IN THE FUTURE' sign.

ok this isn't a response to anybody it's just a pointless rant, OK? thanks. here's the thing: the new policy ("Don't be a fucking dick to people") is really, really easy to abide by. so the thing is i am not a dick. ive never been banned, never started a thread that was deleted, never done revives or whatever. when ive had a problem with people with very few exceptions ive been measured and honest in my dealings with them. and id like to believe that my not being a dick would give me some kind of credibility with the mods. but apparently it doesnt--apparently even questioning gershy's ban makes you some kind of idiot stalker fukk, or worse, a "lawyer."

gershy was banned for posting a smirking response (four weeks ago!) to a libelous post linked to by another poster. it was that month-old post that was the "straw that broke the camel's back."

lets recap:

- gershy did not link to the libelous off-board post.
- GERSHY MADE HIS RESPONSE POST FOUR WEEKS BEFORE THE ONE-WEEK "DONT BE A DICK" GRACE PERIOD

AND LOOK i get that the dude has done objectionable things IN THE PAST but i think its really weak of you guys to see that you were wrong for banning him because of that and then change your reason for doing so! he was banned for a really specific reason--that post--and its fucking lame to change that reason when it turns out to be baseless! i mean for fucks sake no one has even seen the thread, and everyone thinks he was banned for stalking gabbneb (btw gabb i was hoping u could get my back on these legalistic insults, no worries about the feeling awesome thread it was a poor lol & im sorry).
