Bad dubbing
For some reason all the apostrophes in this thread have turned into weird code, I wonder if something could be done about this?
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 13:06 (seventeen years ago)
I saw a few posts last night from people saying their apostrophes were displaying wrong, but they all look fine to me, incl. the ones on your thread.

The post looks fine to me too, Tuomas.

Why Can't I Touch It
This thread seems to have the same problem in the title and the initial post, but all the other threads look fine. If the problem is in my end, I wonder why it affects only these two threads and not any of others with apostrophes?
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 13:19 (seventeen years ago)
'
This is the code apostrophes are replaced with in those two threads.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 13:20 (seventeen years ago)
C B Luce's "The Women" (1939) vs "The Women" (2008)
The same problem with this thread too. It seems to only affect thread titles and initial posts, as the apostrophes in all the following posts look normal. And the apostrophes in other thread titles still look normal, for some reason the wonkiness is limited to these few threads.

What browser are you using?

― Kerm, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)
this happens in some versions of internet explorer i think.

Yeah, this happens for certain threads when I'm using IE on Mrs Vague's laptop. But fuck it, it's IE, y'know?
― Scowly D (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:49 (seventeen years ago)
Is this what you see, Tuomas: ' ?
― ==つ~~~(o)(o) (libcrypt), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 17:00 (seventeen years ago)
' should be rendered as an apostrophe by every browser out there. Otherwise, it could be an encoding issue.
― ==つ~~~(o)(o) (libcrypt), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)
I imagine it is apos that Tuomas is seeing, and if it isn't, then that is indeed the root of the problem.
The reason you only see it on titles and text, and all of a sudden, is because I stuck code in there to do it to them because I was in there fixing another problem. I forgot to take them back out. Still, browsers should deal with it, but if they don't I can take it back out. Can you explain what you are seeing Tuomas?
― Keith, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)
You mean ', Keith?
― ==つ~~~(o)(o) (libcrypt), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)
D'oh too slow.
Yeah I mean that but was having trouble typing!
― Keith, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, it's "'" I was seeing. But it was only when I was using IE on my work computer, now that I'm back home and using Firefox the apostrophes are normal.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 18:30 (seventeen years ago)
Hmm, I wrote ' there, but it changed automatically.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)
lol
― lol (HI DERE), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)
I guess if you write "apos" with those two characters it automatically changes into an apostrophe. But for some reason it didn't do so on IE with those three threads.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 18:32 (seventeen years ago)
The answer is "IE is broek", something that's been true for the past 10 or so years.
― lol (HI DERE), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)
In all correctness, I should get the posts to do an apos too instead of ', but it would screw too many people up. I suspect you can put up with the thread titles, but the posts would be too annoying.

Also would be bad for pedants translating all 's into &apos. You don't want apos in all cases. Sometimes it's actually an open single quote you want.

I see it right now on ILM New Answers, using my GF's old skool Compaq with IE.

also worth noting that the thread title two posts above appears as Why Can't I Touch It
― sleeve, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 01:57 (seventeen years ago)
Noted here also that the thread title appears to me as Why Can't I Touch It, sometimes Why Can't I Touch It, and rarely, Why Can't I Touch It.

Apart from ActiveX controls and some poor saps with a locked-down SOE at work, why the hell does anyone use IE anymore?
